adamf Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 We have one particular printer, a Hp LaserJet 1022n that refuses to print until the spooler is restarted on the server. The pupils and staff can connect to the printer and the queue fills up but nothing happens after that. I've re-created the printer, the port, re-installed the driver, all of which make no difference. Any ideas? Cheers Adam.
adamf Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 We have 40 network printers and this is the only one with the problem. I don't think moving the spooler will make a difference.
button_ripple Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Disable bidirectional support We have a HP LaserJet 1022nw that wouldn't work until this was done. Although it prints fine when I install it locally on my computer and don't disable Bidirectional Support! 2
AngryTechnician Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 A similar problem happens quite lot with the HP 2600n; that one often crashes the Spooler service completely, taking out all the printers on the server. It's down to the drivers for the rubbish print engine that HP bought in from Zenographics for their cheaper product lines. The irony of course is that HP's own drivers are infamous for bloat and bugs, but these ones surpass even HP's own efforts. I personally will not touch any HP printer these days. I've just had so many serious problems with them over the years that I simply do not trust them to work right.

Agreed - but it's not just HP - it's always amazed me that printer manufacturers invest thousands in developing a machine that will put a speck of toner on a piece of paper accurately to within a fraction of a millimeter, then release software and drivers so crap they prevent it from being used to it's best advantage:mad: Epson seem RELATIVELY good at the moment, but IMHO their software is nowhere near the quality of their hardware.
AliG Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 We have this problem with a 1018 laserjet, did you manage to resolve it?
ricki Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 HI I have just had the same problem with a 1022n. I installed it from the the new driver on the hp site and it would not work and in fact crashed the spooler. The only way I could fix it was to install it from the original cd and now it works fine. Dont know why. Richard
Fuzzz Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Have you tried another printerdriver, like the one for the HP LaserJet 4. I use that driver for many printers overhere... it's the first thing I do when i got problems with a printerdriver (HP or other). Most (laser-)printers will work perfectly with this driver.
AngryTechnician Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Unfortunately anything with the Zenographics engine will not take generic drivers. They are host-based printers with no onboard print language interpreter.
contink Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 Just as an aside, although it's probably unrelated... I found that a one RIS image I had with various runtimes pre-installed would crash the spooler service because of a bad VB6 runtime... Re-installing the runtime fixed it very quickly. Just a random thought for anyone with a different but semi-related problem
Mcshammer_dj Posted March 20, 2009 Posted March 20, 2009 I have seen this and was able to fix by removing the tick from the bi directional printing!! on the server. 2
adamf Posted March 20, 2009 Author Posted March 20, 2009 Been a bit slow at replying, unticking bi-directional support fixed it!
Pumaedition Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Just had experience of this...installed a 1022n and it would crash the print spooler service every 6 minutes. Unticked the bi-directional support button, and it hasnt crashed so far. result!
Michael Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 The other 'feature' I notice with HP's is that it can create a HP TCP/IP port. Change this to a Standard TCP/IP port and I've found printing to be much more reliable.
MattCrick Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 I had to use the HP Universal Driver on this Printer as the updated one on the HP website continually crashed the print spooler on a Win 2k3 server, just as you described... Our server died, so had to buy and build a brand new replacement. I thought I'd get all new printer drivers from the HP site... Such a bad idea... Found SO many broken shoddy drivers... Do HP not validate drivers before releasing them??!
contink Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Just to note there is a wiki for this stuff now.. http://www.edugeek.net/wiki/index.php/HP_Printers_FAQ
