Hebdenlad Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Is it me or would the Edugeek Conference on 28 May be an ideal opportunity for you to take some of us aside and do the NDA group talk? Butuz The 28th May would be a good time but I'm on holiday that day (it's my sons birthday and I'll be up to my eyes in iPODs and Lego!). Any alternative ideas? Have a great weekend all. Cheers, Phil
Hebdenlad Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 My idea was to use the fast disks for virtual machines and use a separate JBOD to create a RAID-Z2 of bigger but slower SATA disks for archiving purposes. Now I just need to lure Phil to darkest Lincolnshire so I can find out whether it's possible. Pete, More than happy to come to "darkest Lincolnshire"... give me a call to sort. You need to understand what we have done with SSDs, ZFS and HSP... Cheers, Phil
linescanner Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Guys, just to let you know that the 4TB 7110 has just hit the price lists. Just working on getting the Edu price confirmed. It is currently not on Matching Grant or Edu promo, I am however aware that the Matching Grant List is due for update early next week. Will keep you all posted.
linescanner Posted May 1, 2009 Posted May 1, 2009 Quick update on pricing for the 4TB unit. Standard education pricing for you guys, brings it out at £9,920.00 + VAT Will update if any news on MGP or Promo pricing in the future. 1
Hebdenlad Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 (edited) Morning all, I'm sure you all be pleased to know that the new 2009.Q2 simulator is now available for download. You can find it here: http://blogs.sun.com/fishworks/entry/sun_storage_7000_2009_q2 It is very easy to set up and use. You'll need VMware player which can be found at loads of places on the internet. I use http://www.filehippo.com to find that sort of thing and it has a whole bunch of other useful software there too. Enjoy the week. Warmest regards, Phil Edited May 5, 2009 by Hebdenlad URL not displaying in Firefox 2.0
Hebdenlad Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Morning all (again), Am waiting to see what the public URL is for the VirtualBox version of the S7000 simulator. If you simply cannot wait then let me know on here and I'll burn a CD for you. Regards, Phil 1
sev9756 Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Hi Phil, Thanks for this - but the blog post only seems to have a link to the Sun Download centre for the firmware release rather than the vmware image of the simulator. Unless I've missed something (likely!) Cheers Alan

Unless I've missed something (likely!) Cheers Alan Oops. See what you mean. you can eventually get to the download section. But in the interests of public safety and hygene here is another URL Sun Storage 7000 Series Software Updates - Fishworks - wikis.sun.com For those of you not wanting to go to 2009.Q2 you can see the earlier 1.0x releases here as well. You do not need to go through the releases to update to the latest version. You can go straight to the 2009.Q2 from 1.0 if you wish. For those of you in a non-clustered environment you will experience a short outage. Cheers, Phil 1
Butuz Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Am I being ultra thick here - or is that page still linking to the actual firmware upgrade for the 7000 series rather than the vmware simulator? or is the sim included in the firmware update? Cheers Butuz
kmount Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 I'm fairly sure that's the upgrade package I applied to my Simulator.
cookie_monster Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 So is it just an upgrade pack? If so do you have a link to the simuator download Kim? Thanks.
kmount Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Hi there, I've not yet seen a new link turn up for the Simulator (with this update applied). I'm sure Phil will be able to furnish us with a bit more info as it becomes available. 1
Butuz Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Aah I see. I have not got the old version running - so I will wait for a new version! Butuz

Cheers Butuz Guys, Apologies for this. Jumped the gun a bit here.... We have the internal link here and we ae pushing to get it out in the public domain. for those that need / want it sooner let me know your address and contact details via private message and I'll burn one on to a CD and send i off. Cheers, Phil
linescanner Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Guys, just a note to say the the 4TB 7110 did not make the Matching Grant List PM me if you need some more info and we can see what options we can come up with.

I'm trying to find out why it didn't make the list and see if there's any way it can be added. What would help me is a show of hands from you guys on here as to how many of you would buy a S7110 4TB if it was on matching grant. Cheers, Phil

Cheers, Phil I am not 100% certain what the effect of the "matching grant" would be on price, but we are very pleased to hear that the 4TB version was coming out as we felt that the 2TB was going to be too small for us. The 4TB versionn at the right price will be a very difficult offer to refuse. Jonathan 1

The problem is the capacity of the disks really because by the time you setup decent amoutn of raid protection i.e. raid 6 with DP or similar the 4TB is gone and will probably be down to 2.5 to 3Tb (usuable) at best. TIA, Ash. Edited May 6, 2009 by spc-rocket 1

Cheers, Phil Only if the Nehalems have made it on too, seeing as they are available on the US matching grant already. Not seen the updated list yet though. No Nehalems, no Sun atm (it'll be Dells!) 1
Butuz Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 (edited) I too am a bit worried that 2tb per box is not going to be enough for the next 5 years and can make a good case for going for the 4tb one instead of the 2tb one. As long as it is not massiveley more expensive. Will be looking to buy through Cutter next week. Also Phil - while your on "matching grant hero" duties - if you could get an Ultra 24 put on to matching grant (dual or quad core, not to fussed really!) - I and I am sure others would be looking to buy lots of them too! Already going to be buying servers storage and monitors - so why not make it the whole range! Will be buying at least two servers - if as DMcCoy suggests the Nehalems can be put on MG - I can make a good environemental case for moving to them too. All I need now is to negotiate matching grant on hot dogs from the canteen and I will be one very happy bunny! Butuz Edited May 6, 2009 by Butuz 1
Hebdenlad Posted May 6, 2009 Posted May 6, 2009 Hello, I most definitely would do! Rob Cheers! I'll add you to the list Phil
