jcs808 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Hello all Do you have a desktop computer in every classroom, or are your teaching staff issued laptops. I ask the question because over the years we have moved from desktops to laptops, but now I get the impression that most of our teaching staff would prefer to have a desktop computer in the classroom. I can see the possitives and negatives of both, just wondered what went on everywhere else. Thanks

Ric_ Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 It's always seemed pointless putting desktops in every room to me. The teachers will always want laptops so that they can 'work' at home so they may as well use it at work too - reduces our costs too. In the IT suites I do put a PC at the front of the class - I think it's a better solution when it's in constant use during the day. We don't use PCs for registration though (registration units by each door and proximity cards instead). 1

I'm aiming for a bank of half-a-dozen thin clients per classroom, with the server for the thin clients in each room used as the machine hooked up to the projector. Quackers Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 We gave every teacher a laptop in 2004, but now every room has an Interactive Whiteboard were putting PC's in. Its gets very messy having cables going to laptops, plus ones such as the VGA look like they are not designed to go in and out at least once a day. 1
CESIL Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 We have a laptop in each room for the IWB and most teachers never take them home (or even out of the classroom!). I have had loads of problems with broken mobos and cables from the constant plugging in/out of the VGA leads etc. When these laptops are replaced next month the new ones will all have docking stations so that the leads can stay attached. The crazy thing is that even the teachers who leave the laptops at school see having a desktop as a "downgrade" 1

mrforgetful Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 We're moving to SIMS to do our registration so all rooms have a desktop unless the teacher using that room has a laptop and that cna be used instead. Some have both. 1
mb2k01 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 Only SMT, Heads of Year and Department Heads are promised access to laptops. Every classroom has a dedicated network station (desktop) for teaching. For electronic registering, reliable access and minimal problems you can't go wrong with it really. 1
contink Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 We have desktops, one per classroom in each of my schools and I had to fight for them in the one school where laptops are standard. Reasoning is simply that if the wireless goes belly up, you still have a hard wired connection to the network. Also, you're not relying on batteries, power packs and having to pull the thing out of a bag, etc... Admittedly these machines are used primarily as classroom workstations, rather than teacher machines. 1
yabbadabba Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 All of our teachers have laptops. The odd teacher has a slightly older desktop in their classroom and they seem to make good use of them. Personally I would rather have a desktop in each classroom for the teachers as the laptops do suffer a lot of damage from cables being plugged and unplugged every day. 1

We've found wireless isn't reliable enough, we've also found that not all teachers are capable of connecting a laptop to a projector. We also issue all full time teachers laptops. 1

ssiruuk2 Posted March 10, 2009 Posted March 10, 2009 We are phasing out staff laptops as they are nothing but a pain in the rear and a drain on time / money to keep them going. We have trialled a decent HP small form factor desktop in classrooms and the response from the teachers has always been very positive and would gladly ditch their laptop for a fixed machine. If staff are moving about all the time its only so long before connectors get broken or the thing gets dropped on the floor - most laptops just aren't up to the job. Laptops for teachers.. what a fantastic waste of tax payers money that was! 1
