Biker Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I’m looking at replacing our old firewall does anyone have any recommendations? We have around 1,000 users and will require web filtering.
tmcd35 Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 A cheap server, couple of NIC's and a copy of Smoothwall Linux. Maybe throw in a copy of Squid proxy server for good measure - I'm sure it's possible to do web filtering with Squid. Maybe even run them both as separate VM's on one box?
Aurora77 Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Hi Biker, I can recommend Watchguard as a firewall Firebox X Peak e-Series | WatchGuard 1
Domino Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I'd recommend smoothwals network guardian - filtering is unparalleled 1
_Bat_ Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I'd recommend smoothwals network guardian - filtering is unparalleled I agree. I use it both at home and at work, extremely good firewall and filtering. Really simple to set up as well.
gshaw Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Yup we use IPCop which is a freebie fork of Smoothwall so the commercial version should do the trick
kesomir Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I second (third?) Smoothwall's School Guardian.
ssiruuk2 Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I have one of these with the AV license. SSG 140 - WAN and LAN Security - Juniper Networks Has been faultless since it went in.
Sylv3r Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 We use the smoothwall UTM here and very pleased with it.
MatthewL Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Another recommendation to Watchguard, good bits of kit and find them very reliable.
john Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Smoothwall UTM with me and very pleased with it. Know people that also say good things about Watchguards, never used them myself but hear good things.
SteveMC Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 I'd recommend smoothwals network guardian - filtering is unparalleled It is indeed (probably actually go for the School Guardian, as that's the Education targeted product) - plus you can get a 30-day trial of it too which is completely unrestricted (we're just setting up one of our local schools with such a thing to run alongside their ISA server for half their users). And of course, the fact that half the Smoothwall support team seem to hang about in here doesn't hurt either Stephen
ezzauk Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Were having a Smoothwall UTM 1000 and Smoothwall Network Guardian 2008 system installed tomorrow. I cant wait
White_Fi Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I have one of these with the AV license. SSG 140 - WAN and LAN Security - Juniper Networks Has been faultless since it went in. Juniper Networks FTW I configure / support these day in day out. Simple brilliant hard core FW
