Can I just note that I'm now officially confused..

 

On one side we have discussion about money making schemes... Then we are told that money isn't a problem, and it's not all about money.

 

So people take that on board and say ok... forget the money making schemes then and...

 

... then we hear that, hold on, money is important too...

 

 

Am I the only one whose head is spinning here?!!

 

 

 

My opinion is pretty succinct...

 

If it ain't broke, don't fix it...

 

Some lovely ideas but given the expanse of some of them and the limited resources (time being primary one that springs to mind), I'm not sure the cost/benefit is necessarily great.

@contink: I think what is confisuing you is the fact that, yes, we can afford to do things at the moment (just!) but we would like to do more and do them better.

 

For instance, the conferences we hold now are free to attend but you need to make your own way. If we had more money we could subsidise travelling expenses or pay for accomodation - thus allowing those who cannot afford to travel the opportunity to attend.

Right... So when DB said... Money isn't a problem he mean't it's not a problem for what we do now, but in order to expand we need more.

I'm not entirely sure Edugeek needs to diversify into dedicated MeduGeek, BizuGeek, etc. I think we should continue to welcome those from outside our specialist field but I think by diversifying in this way we run the risk of losing our identity.

 

If we are looking to expand our core membership we are better looking at the 1000's of IT Tech/NM's in the UK that haven't yet discovered us and expanding more overseas. I think we can gain more as a community by welcoming in IT Techs and NM's from schools around the world than moving in to the Medical or Business markets.

 

The idea of providing (for a fee) product forums for companies is a particularly interesting one. But I think, if Edugeek decides to go down this route, the companies we offer this service to should have some relevance to the Education sector. Companies and products that this service is offered to should be of mutual benefit to us, the company in question and their end users.

 

If Edugeek needs to raise funds to finance BETT, Conferences, Advertising, and improvements to the service in Australia and US then I see nothing wrong with carefully placed click-thru ads, selling bespoke message boards to companies, more additions to the Outlet, a 'certified supplier list', etc.

 

More importantly - Where is the Edugeek shop so I can buy my Edugeek Mug, T-Shirt and Baseball cap?

 

Hat's off to DB (and all the admins/mods) for his (and their) hard work keeping this all going. This is an invaluable education resource and it'd be a shame to see it disappear or lose it unique identity. Personally I hope DB can earn enough from this venture to retire to an Island off Morecambe ( ) Bay.

Another idea is a kind of edugeek+ (Web Development & Design Tutorials - NETTUTS) here advanced tutorials, source code and other + worthy stuff could be placed make the cost resonable - maybe even pay a % to the author i.e 10p per unique viewer or downloader, same kind of area could then be used as a preemptive store for advance copies of the EduGeek Magazine e.g a week before publication similar to how (Choose PWTorch Site Version) do their newsletter.

 

Then older previously only available online tutorials could be utilised in the EduGeek magazine.

 

This idea would need some tidying up but I would be willing to sit down and talk about a possible business model (free of charge) with yourselves.
