Hey do any of u use Sharepoint services or portal server?

 

If so what for/how is it implemented ?

 

If anyone doesnt know what it is, sharepoint services is a free addon for 2k3server that provides an easy to manage team website with a calender, lists, contacts database, etc. It has a news/Anouncements sction and links and pictures. It also allows you to host documents and files on it which intergrate into Office XP/2003 and allow you to manage/opoen/save the document from within the website.

We have sharepoint server fully rolled out at our place.

 

Depending on which group your are in i.e. Student, Teacher, SMT, HOD,etc... the intranet screens are rendered based on group access.

 

We have class server 4 intergrated into it providing all areas of the school with "One Click" access to information.

So what's the overhead - can poor measley - low budget schools like us afford it?

@Mark: Overheads well, you would need a dedicated server for sharepoint so there is that, do you then go for the free sharepoint services for 2003 or go full blown Office 2003 Portal server, we did the later as it came as part of our M$ Select agreement but it depends what you want to do.

 

The main overhead is knowledge, I have been using sharepoint for over 3 years now but if you are coming into it new it can be a steep learning curve.

 

My advice would be to get it installed, don't tell anyone about it, get used to it and once you are happy tell people what you can do, that way you won't get any nasty suprises, been there done that !!!

We are starting Sharepoint in September along with Microsoft class serveR.

 

I have hada quick look at it and ordered a couple of books, but as of yet not really played around with it too much.

I have just installed it from the Windows Server 2003 R2 "Configure Your Server Wizard".

Now what!?!

Does anyone know of an idiots guide?

We want to use it for the following purposes

+ Shared internal calendar (link to Outlook 2003)

+ Shared internal contatcs (link to Outlook 2003)

+ ICT Helpdesk (MS do a free template)

+ Room/Resource booking (MS do a free template)

What issues are you having?

 

Presuming that you've used the default installation, the installation has automatically extended a web site with sharepoint services. Most of what you want to achieve can be done through the basic editor in the browser.

 

Anything you can't do in the browser, should be done in Front Page. Although you can probably edit pages in other editors, they won't recognise web part zones.

 

One thing that's lacking in sharepoint services is decent navigation, although there are a few free web parts which can build on what's already there.

 

IMHO, the best way to learn sharepoint is to install it on a virtual server and play about with it. There are plenty of blogs, forums, free web parts out there.

OK, i worked out how to get all the parts of sharepoint that I wanted but it has brought up a few more problems.

Mainly in, for example, the Room Booking template, when you go to choose what kind of resource it is it gives you to options, i.e. Auditorium & Conference.

How do I add "Classroom" to that list?

Do I need to edit a database in access? If so where do I find it?

No, it should be much easier than that. It can all be changed from within the browser. When you select the list you want to modify (ie Room Resources), select Modify settings and columns in the left hand pane. Then select the column you want to modify (ie Type of resource), then change the list of available choices to those appropriate to your establishment.

At first I wasn't impressed with sharepoint but knowing simple things likes this makes it more appealing all the time. I've seen loads of sharepoint demos but never been to formal training or a workshop.
