Edu-IT Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 (edited) I need to get a new wireless router for home as the one I have isn't compatible with some VPN software I need to use. I don't want to spend a fortune because the one I have works perfect for everything else and obviously it feels like a waste of money buying a new one but I have no choice. Can anyone suggest a reliable and reasonably priced router? I may see what I can find on eBay. Could I buy just a normal ADSL model with ethernet port and attach the wireless router I have at the moment to it for wireless connectivity? Edited January 27, 2009 by Edu-IT

Yes, this would work but if the problem is with VPN /PPTP PASSTHROUGH this won't help you. What exactly is the problem you're having?

I'm using Cisco VPN software to connect to a VPN and for some reason it won't connect through the Linksys router I have, apparantly it's not compatible according to a Google search, so I need to find a router that will work. With a standard ADSL modem I can connect fine so it's definately the router.

I have had no success with getting my VPN working and I too use a wireless router (NetGear). I must try a direct connection and see if that solves my problem!
tom_newton Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 It is not a NAT-traversal problem, then, but a straight incompatibility? Unfortunately most consumer modem/routers are pretty terrible. Draytek are usually a decent enough step up for SOHO type operation. Try the Draytek Vigor 2700.
eduabncs Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 (edited) The Cisco VPN uses IPSEC and you will need to make sure that a) your router suports IPSEC pass-through b) that IPSEC pass-through is enabled and configured on said router. c) Windows Firewall is either off or configured to allow the CISCO VPN and IPSEC. By the way which Model of Linksys router are you using. Linksys is a Cisco company so I'd be very suprised if IPSEC-Passthrough is not supported. Edited January 28, 2009 by eduabncs

WAG54GS is the router model. It is not a NAT-traversal problem, then, but a straight incompatibility? No idea. Problem I have is that I need to find one which works, obviously not all do. john Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 I'm a Netgear person myself and like and use many of them, but perhaps as Tom has suggested try a Draytek router, they do cost a chunk more than Netgears but they are a more business / SOHO product.

For 24 hours, then it went back. It *said* vpn passthru on the specs and box, it just didn't actually pass any vpn traffic.

It *said* vpn passthru on the specs and box, it just didn't actually pass any vpn traffic. I was able to connect to a VPN using the built in Windows connection stuff but not with this Cisco software.
Edu-IT Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 Problem solved. Managed to get PC World (Eugh) to change the router for another one. Same brand but different model and it works a treat.
