Fire regs and plug sockets

One of my schools has just had a fire inspection and the PO tells me that the report states that *all* equipment must be turned off at the plug when not in use.

 

Causes a nightmare for remote management of computers!

 

Has anyone else come across this regulation?

nope never in the last 13 years in IT mostly with H&S assessors responsibilities have I ever read that in training or has a pat tester ever said that.

yeah i think you'll find this is total rubbish, get them to show you the H&S regs that prove it

 

edit: only thing i could see why they'd say this is if they were trying to "go green" it sounds like one of those stupid ideas from the "lets save the planet" hippies

I've never heard of it. Guess someone's 'interpreted' a guideline somewhere and come up with this one. What do they want you to do, spend two hours switching on in the morning and two more switching off at night? Crazy.

Got to try and find out if this is 'in' the report and from the LA or an interpretation of the report.

Yeah that's the best bet get a hard copy of the original document from the LA, my money is still on green people thinking still switched on at the plug is the same as standby

well for the rest of it i agree. would force staff to turn projectors off at the end of the day!!! i can see what you mean if you need to log in to a station tho. i would just not kill switch that room then wake from lan.

Never heard this before. It'd mean having to go around the school and switch around 1000 plugs at night, and turning them on again in the morning. Spread out around the site, so that would be about an hour or 2's work. Not exactly likely.

Think of talking to SMT to point out that the level of service will drop if this is enforced.

Do you allow access to files etc outside of school aswell and have a VLE accessible from outside of school? if so there's your ammunition, also say that well i go at x time at night so if you want to implement this there'll be no computer access between the hours i leave and arrive back in the morning. If it's anywhere like our place they'll cave in as we often have SMT staying till 6pm

I share an office with our H&S manager and she's never heard of it... her view is that it's an energy saving ploy.

I'd agree it's a ploy, seems somewhat unmanageable.

I remember being in a meeting in which a fireman was giving a talk etc. Was going very well but then he started spouting off about the amount of cables and how it was a fire risk blah blah blah. I stood up and pointed out that for a classroom we needed power for:

 

- monitor

- PC

- Speakers

- Whiteboard

- projector

- USB Hub [ sometimes ]

- Scanner [ Sometimes ]

- Camera re-charge stations [ Somtimes ]

 

If he had a problem with that then why was he using the PC, monitor, projector & speakers for his Power Point presentation talk on fire safety, and if he had a problem then he could turn it off.

I got a long hard stare from him and he shut up & carried on.

There are very real reasons why SOME things might need turning off, heating elements controlled by thermostats spring to mind. (Not if they are the only/main source of heat for the room, natch) And the premiss of deprecating the INDISCRIMINATE use of 4-ways and extension cables is fine by me.
