Is this an unusual thing to do?

We had some components delivered for some PC upgrades today. I've set them up on my desk as pictured so I can get an OS on one to make an image. Everyone here seems to think this an extremely unusual thing to do yet it is something I used to do all the time when I worked as a shop tech.

 

Is this odd or are my colleauges a bunch of n00bs?

Thats not an ide cable is it! I just built a new computer for home and deliberatly chose a plextor dvd drive so that I would be ide free.

 

Then I fitted a soundblaster which uses a front bay that connects with a modified ide cable

Its not staying like that. Once I've finished the image the motherboard will go into a proper case with standoffs and everything

I also had a piece of cardboard with 'Computer' written on it at one point. Linux really will run on anything.

I do this all the time until I've tested it and it's running ok!

 

And then sometimes, if it's running and i'm being lazy, it just sits there running like that for a while, the airflow is good

wellfor many years use to run a computer on a board so could checking parts etc But dont here as not got the room...

There used to be a computer mounted on a lump of wood with a perspex case over it here. It had all the components spread out so you could see all the parts. It was used in teaching IIRC.
