FN-GM Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Probably not for a while. They are upto SP3 after XP was launched in 2001. The SP focus seems to be focused on vista and to be honest Vista needs it more than XP

Quackers Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I'm sure they said Service Pack 3 would be the last, but with the big backlash against Vista making XP be the longest mainstream version of Windows yet i personally think it would be irresponsible of Microsoft not to release a service pack 4. Maybe they will have a change of mind.

They started development on SP7 NT did suck though Besides, what more do you need in XP that couldn't be added with an insignificant update? extra functionality to work with 2008 GPO's is added, can't really see anything else it needs... Roll on Windows 7!

Michael Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 I do believe XP SP3 is the last XP Service Pack, however I suspect in a few years they may release an Update Rollup, which is sort of like a mini Service Pack. This is what Microsoft did for Windows 2000, instead of SP5. Service Packs can and do include new functions in addition to fixing bugs. Update Rollups are just bug fixes only. I wonder sometimes whether Vista SP2 will be the last Vista Service Pack also. 2000 SP4, XP SP3, Vista SP2, Windows 7 (maybe only SP1) we shall have to wait and see... I create the Post XP SP3 Packs because it saves so much time. Pretty much automated, you could do many machines at once or make yourself they well earned coffee

I cannot find it, but i remember many years ago a paused video shot of nasa running NT 4 Service Pack 7. It had it in the bottom corner of the screen like beta versions of Windows and Service Packs do.
User3204 Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 If you just want to install the security fixes &c, then you can try AutoPatcher.com which will do this. I'm not sure how it works though, at work I find it easy enough to connect to my WSUS server, and leave it overnight, and then a nicely updated machine sits before me.... At home, I use Ubuntu (although they so bring out patches/fixes every week).
