I was down there a few months ago and they were pulling in orders for servers and racking like it was going out of fashion with some very large prestigious clients.....interesting to see that they are closing up now....wonder if Stone will maintain the "brand" if you can call it that. Still.....good riddance i suppose, i have always preferred HP /IBM /DELL .... even though I have been required to facilitate some third party stuff over the years....never did like it. 2009 is going to be fun fun fun. :D:D:D:D:D

Don't really know much about stone other the company website claims it's the UKs second biggest OEM. If Sugar does get shot he'll be getting rid of his last siginificant interest in the IT sector, his wealth is concentrated mostly on commercial real estate these days. As for viglen and stone, sure they want to compete with RM re BSF, but there's a lot of other IT work out there in FE, higher education and public sector in general where RM perhaps don't have the same foothold. But then that's an extremely competitive area, what you need to be able to do is have the list of clients and specialties selling end-to-end solutions from the big server, storage and networking companies and to differentiate from companies selling similar solutions. Viglen do that already with storage to their bigger customers, i don't how successful that professional services part of Viglens business is but any company with a few project wins would be very attractive to a company like stone, a lot of the time it's about getting in to an org and once your in you can sell more kit and service. It's got to be more profitable than selling white boxes and seeing RM win most of the big BSF contracts.

We have 35 laptops here from Viglen... about 7 still run, but none of them are of any use for anything - they were rubbish when we got them as well, despite being above average spec at the time. By comparison, we have PC's that are half the spec and half the RAM that run better than they can with a totally virgin XP install on them.

Yep, that makes a lot of sense.....stone already do a lot in the way of storage catered for the small organisation. Viglen would fit in as the storage services division for the midmarket and the small customer expanding into the midmarket. They seem to have some high value contract wins with hitachi kit, and there are a couple of case studies with datacore, sepaton and onstor products mentioned.....all of which fits nicely into that area where orgs are looking for more sophisticated and expandable storage needs beyong buffalo NASes. It's ultra competitive and a crowded market place and you really need people who know their stuff.......that's the real value of what i think Stone would be buying.....that data services expertise. Sure getting all those customers who've bought the white boxes is nice, but what you really want to do is sell them storage/services and getting some repeat business. How much is this deal worth then ? 10m, 20m, or 50million ?? I've no idea of how much a company like viglen would be valued at. Can they even acquire VSG as seperate from Viglen as a whole.

Intriguing :-) The high performance computing web site is there (we've got quite a lot of the HPC stuff) as (I think) is the rest of the site if you know URLs (Google is your friend ...) they've always sold a mix of stuff but their good stuff is as good as anyone else (eg real Intel motherboards, vPro etc) and their support is excellent.
