netbook for a teacher?

Im after a netbook for a teacher as her main computer (her 15inch is too big and heavy) and apparently she likes the idea of a netbook as her main computer......

 

personally i think she would be very happy with a 13inch laptop but someone has given the idea of the netbooks, although i think she'll hand it back after 7 days and i have been asked to order a netbook for her.

 

So, what would you give a teacher? is there any with XP Pro?

Get a linux version and install XP on it (as long as you have license haha).

 

I just got an Acer Aspire One and I'm very happy with it - although I wouldn't like it to be my main computer.

I'd say give her a go on a linux variant.

 

Our head of music at my last place swapped his 17inch toshiba for a 7inch EEPC and loves it.

 

Installed various linux transcription/composing packages and he uses it all the time.

im not being rude to this teacher, but she's of the mature nature and wont be able to read those tiny keys let alone the screen!

Send her to PC world/etc and get her to try before you buy. I personally couldnt handle more than half an hour on a Netbook as they are far too small and slow. Some people love them though so...

A teacher here has an HP-branded MSI Wind. Quite nice, I've had a quick play with it and typed on the keyboard, actually better than I thought it would be. That's a a good point about XP Pro - thinking about it, all the Windows netbooks I've seen come with XP Home.

I have been looking at these, if I got one with Linux installed on it, wiped it and installed XP would I have many driver issues, are the drivers freely available on the net? Just something I am looking into.

no problem diverted the issue by reminding the teacher in question it had no DVD drive!

The Samsung NC10 has an almost full size keyboard. I have no problem typing on it!

 

No CD drive isn't a problem with Linux but it might make installing Windows a bit of a mission unless you PXE boot or something.

We have use nlite to build a cut-down windows XP Pro install on the NC10 and it works great! We used the Slimming Down Windows XP Professional Using nLite [EeeUser Eee PC Wiki] guide as our starting point. We needed make sure we had an XP Pro license and downloaded the np-nc10 drivers from samsung website first of course

Pfffft, what sort of half-soaked guide is that? They haven't even skipped the OOBE and set it to use the classic theme!

I'd go for a Samsung NC10, good batt life and great keyboard. The 10.2" screen is the perfect trade off between size and portability. We have 35 of these in school.

 

If you need a cheaper option the Acer Aspire One series is a good 2nd choice, especially if you buy the Linux version.
