Glad you're in the same boat as me! I'm going to visit a school at some point who are beta testing certain modules and it would be cool to have a prod and see what it can do.

Right, this is what I would do. Straight off the bat, LDAP integration. Users can then login to your system with their domain usernames and passwords, and is one less thing to remember and go wrong. Sort out some different types of users and groups. Global admins, school admins (IT, music tech...etc), teachers, students...etc. See if you can automate this by getting information from OUs and things. Try and get your hands on an export from SIMS or EBS or another big MIS system and see if you can import some of the information into your system. Even better would be to get the data "live" from the MIS system so that you don't actually store it anywhere. This removes you from a lot of data protection rubbish and you don't have to worry about it because you're not storing any data. Once you've got that down, you can shelve all that and leave it alone. Next comes things like making courses, uploading documents...etc, but all that will come naturally once you have the basic framework down. You will probably find that people will be a lot more willing to talk and share ideas once you have a basic shell of a program down and they have something to work with instead of a blank canvas.

The Samsung NC10 has an almost full size keyboard. I have no problem typing on it! No CD drive isn't a problem with Linux but it might make installing Windows a bit of a mission unless you PXE boot or something.

Sorry to bump up an old thread, but does anyone have any more information on SLN2? I had a meeting yesterday with RM and SCC, but it would be nice to hear some opinions from people actually using it and how you got on with it! As long as our MIS system can output to a CSV... I think that's about as far as my involvement will go, but it would still be cool to hear your thoughts. Cheers guys.

Unless you use layer 3 switches. TBH, you really don't need two entirely seperate networks, permissions on folder shares...etc will be plenty good enough I would imagine? There are very few advantages with having more than one domain. The only one coming to mind at the moment is that it's less easy to accidentally give everyone permissions to do something, for example. WHATEVER\domain users...etc. As from 2008, Vista...etc, everything is more geared up towards a single domain. I don't see any reason at all why you would want to go from a single domain to multiple domains, you're just creating a lot of needless work for yourself and you will ultimately end up with two networks to administer instead of one!

I'd argue that saving locally and copying to somewhere else "adds a level of complexity to the function of saving" to be honest. Maybe it's just me.

Definitely! If you somehow mess up the drive or the file system then you're going to be up the creek well and truly. Get the drive out and get the files off it before you do much else, IMHO. Regarding Windows restarting, it might be a dodgy device driver or a system file. Have you recently done Windows Update?

That's not a bad price at all! Check out the Samsung NC10. Effectively the same under the hood (1.6ghz Atom...etc), but a bigger hard drive and a very nice keyboard. I've just bought one and replaced the hard drive with a 32gb SSD and can't fault it. For the price it's awesome, the screen is just the right size... couldn't be happier with it. It's a bit more expensive than that though, but I got almost 7 hours out of the first charge!

These are the only three non-overlapping channels, so yes, it is best to use them and best to make sure that you don't have any overlaps you do have between APs are on different channels. Definitely worth turning down the power to the minimum needed, but it might take some trial and error before you find the optimum. Shouldn't make any difference, but if you've got that many clients it might be worth leaving the slower speeds enabled, especially if you are planning on lowering the power.

Out of interest, have you got any other Adobe products or a different version of Photoshop you could try on a machine? I've heard some hearsay that Photoshop can't save to a drive over 1TB in size, although I can't see how PS saves files is any different to any other application saving a file.

How did you migrate everyone over to the new server? Is it something silly like everyone has read-only share permissions?
