Surely a more fitting question would be; "what is the answer to life the universe and everything?". Or "How do you fly?"

We have decided to follow the ideology of providing a completely open web based system. The main idea of this being as it will allow for any school to fully customise the system. We are going to build the framework so that there are modules such as forums ect that can be inserted into any chosen page on the site. This will allow for those with limited knowledge to also edit it and add to it. We may then eventually add a web based wysiwyg editor for changing pages. We are going to ignore any form of MIS integration until after we have the framework complete.

When I had an overview of the course it seemed to talk more about computer security and how it works. Yes it also discusses different techniques of breaking into systems but it also discusses ways to protect yourself from these attacks. I really think the Lesson to do with using google should be taught everywhere as me and my friends get so many questions where the answer is the top of the google search. Thanks for the tip about looking into debian. I will come and see if there is anything that I like the look of later.

Thanks. I understand that SIMS integration will be difficult however it appears that it will become more and more required. Burning bridges? In all of these instances I have alerted the IT administrator and in return he has given me access to many different areas of the school system the majority of students are unaware of such as accessing my files from home ect. I am going to create the source forge page later after me and my team have decided on a good name. Any Ideas?

That is why I am no hacker. I don't consider myself a hacker however I follow the hacker way of thinking and the hacker way of taking apart a problem. A Self Appointed hacker is somebody with an incredibly big ego!!! or a script kiddy

Please can you read the site before "flaming" me for posting this. I'm going to try and convince my ICT administrator to teach this (or let me) teach this course to several students at my school. However I was wondering if anybody could help me with convincing him. And any real reviews about the course or if i should find a different one. In short I want to educate people about security of computers, and try and get a larger interest in IT and How computers work. Hi all I am Kai I'm an a level ICT student, a programmer, a co-owner of a hosting company, a web designer for several forums and sites.

I never said I was a hacker or cracker. I was using it to help explain the point. Hackers enjoy solving problems, crackers maliciously go out of the way to destroy and harm people. So the main features that are suggested are for it to be fully customisable with practically any language available. Do you think we should also include a CMS for those users who have limited or no current programming language. I finally spoke to my head of ICT and he said that several main features we should look into are "students being able to access files from home", and "complete SIMS (or a similar system) integration. What do people think of these? We are still deciding on how it will all be tied together, it all depends on what our end user requirements become in order to decide how the codes must interact with each other ect. Oh and by the way my team just picked up 2 more programmers, one with mainly knowledge in C and Delphi, and one with extensive Java knowledge. I looked into this a while back for a friend who wanted a complete system and found that with Skype and Pretty may call centre. A full system could be set up for $500 and the cost of a headset for each computer. Then you just have to manage skype in and skype calling credit for those who are available to make outgoing calls. It also means that a member of staff cna have there phone call them on any computer they log into.

Who is your team? There is a team of 8 of us the majority of which are doing alevels. You where correct in thinking that we are not a team of crack programmers. However we do have large amounts of experience in our individual fields of programming for example several years ago we created our own webhosting company, ect. We have looked at many system's including that of open sim, and decided that a common ground system that is easy to customise and even easier to manage would be nessercery. We have been undecided for several weeks in which direction to begin the specification and what areas should be most focused on. One main area we all seem to agree is key to the system is direct email intergration. We also feel committed to the idea of bringing web 2.0 to school intranets through the likes of student blogs ect. What programming language / database / framework / source code control system / development methodology / etc were you planning to use? We are planning on producing the system as open source, written in a mixture of codes however mainly asp.net and coldfusion with html and php where necercerry. THe team also has great knowledge in Ruby and VB that can be used if required. The main plan is to use an SQL database as it is freely and easily available via many forms. The first process however is to wright a full specification of what must be included. This includes the features of the programming and mapping all of its process's using UML. Therefore i personally would be most greatfull of any features that we should focus on whilst building the system.

The reason i try hard is the same reason people become hackers its a thirst for knowledge. It's not so much what im doing its the fact that im doing it. I learn coding languages and find solutions to problems. If there is a problem then there is a solution. By finding the solution you feel happy with yourself. Its like in other subjects when you find a challenge hard you want to find a solution. That is why i try hard. I could channell this energy into other means but what would you preffer? By finding ways around block's ect then you are solving a problem. A key skill for later life. Yes you may get caught or even expelled, however the chances of that are slim if you have my record, and when i find something serious, e.g last year we found out how to shut down sims via the active directory you let the IT department know. That way i am still being responsible. As to the talks about blocking content for smaller children, i have seen the damage they can and very often do to computers (im talking about reception), and as the time continues they will become even more computer literate. I understand they must be prrotected, but is it responsible to hide somebody from the truth or dangers. Surely it is better to educate them against these and give them the choice to follow your advice and rules. A person should be alloud to roam the greatest recource available to them without control. For that was one of the dreams of the internet, to be a place of freedom of speach, a place where people can be whoever or whatever they want. Not locked within walls that society seems ever so ready to place around them.

Block the proxys then we use programs such as log me in ect and jsut use the internet explorer window to remote control our home machines. There are an unlimited number of DNS's we can use, there are a larger number of us, and we do it for free. So students will always have the upper hand.

We have already disected quite a lot of moodle, however we want the challenge of building something completly ourselves.
