Import DHCP settings from 2003

Has anyone successfully exported the DHCP settings from 2003 server into 2008 (not via upgrading?). If so how!?!?

 

I've spent hours tonight trying to upgrade to 2008, but the install fails and rolls back to 2003 so that's out

 

I will post my error messages tomorrow! (forgot to make a note before leaving work tonight, site staff wanted to go home on time!!)

Can you still use the netsh commands to administer DHCP in Server 2008?

If so you can export and import using this.

I would imagine you can, especially with powershell in 2008. I've only tried exporting from within the 2003 DHCP GUI and importing via the 2008 GUI.

Absolutely - I've scripted a complete DHCP setup and the post-install config uses netsh.

To be honest I really can't remeber how we exported/imported out DHCP settings from the old 2003 box to the 2008 box as it was a fair while ago and I didn't have the fortune of being assigned that task.

 

I do remember one of my colleagues talking about using the NETSH command though.

 

I'll quiz him on Monday and post up how he did it

It's this easy:

 

Backup 2003 DHCP> Install 2008 DHCP> Restore Backup > Stop 2003 service > Start 2008 Service.

 

Job done, its never been easier, and that's somewhere on Microsoft's KB

I did try that first, except it didn't work. It completed successfully, bar the fact that dhcp had nothing in it, I had to install dhcp on a 2003 server and restore it back to that then export with netsh.

Didn't work for me either! Friday night I exported via netsh from 2003 and imported via the GUI into 2008, and all was well today!
