As my better half is a nursery teacher we're going through ink at a ridiculous rate! Next time we need more ink (i.e. in the next two weeks!) I'm looking at replacing our Canon MP170 with something like the Samsung CLX-2160N. It looks compact, not too expensive and is networkable. Have any of you used this, or does anyone have an alternative?

Ideally we want an all-in-one to save on space, but at a push a separate scanner and colour laser is an option.

TIA

I have an Oki C3520 MFP: OKI C3520 Colour Multifunction Printer

It's a scanner, colour laser, networked - although not from/to Linux.

If I'd gotten the C3550 MFP, it would have had a fax in it too, but I didn't want it.

It takes 4x drums and 4x toners (one each), so it means you only replace the ones that you use.

I think it will do sheet-feed scanning to the network, but I've never done this, so I'm not sure what file(s) I would get.

I would advise against getting a CIS for your MP170 unless it's a particularly reliable unit or from RIHAC UK as the support for almost all clone CIS kits is pretty much nill, null, naff-all. Rihac is run by a guy who really (and I mean really knows his stuff and won't leave you hanging).

As to the Epsons, they'll work but make sure you get a waste ink kit in the next few months of purchase and learn about resetting the waste ink counter so you don't get a "service required" message after a lot of printing.

If you have a budget and a clearer idea of what you're trying to print/do with it though I can give you a bit more detailed info on where to look to save you some heartache.. assuming you want to go with CIS' inkjet rather than Laser.

Having never used a CIS my thoughts were laser, but I haven't written off CIS! Generally I do very little printing, but my better half prints off schemes of work, weekly plans, meeting notes, etc for school, mostly black but when she does colour it's usually a few full pages! Budget is like everything as cheap as poss, ideally sub £300.

How do you find it printing cost wise? Since my original post I've read that they can be costly per page? Networking is not essential, more convenient and for a saving of £50 I could make do with one of the spare D-Link print servers we have in school if need be ;)

As I'm not paying the bill I'm not really too worried, but there fairly cheap toners, when the drum or belt goes its skip time tbh as they are just as costly as a new printer. You can also get these:

products

Which will save money for you if yo dont mind getting a little hands on.

I've got a Samsung CLX-2160N at home. All-In-One network thingy.

It's not bad for the money, semi-decent quality print but it's really geared for occasional colour. You can get 'rainbow packs' toner cartridges for about £120.

The scanner on it is only 300dpi, so not great resolution. I haven't really sorted out the network scanning on it yet, it sort of works but I need to tweak it a bit more.

I think it only cost £120 from Dabs a few weeks ago, and for that money for a colour laser it's pretty good. Just not fantastic, but pretty good.
