Do you have a second job during the holidays?

Ok, some of you may think i'm crazy, but i was wondering if anyone could recommend something i could do to make a little extra income during the holidays. Something i could do at home, word processing or something. I remember something about someone typing up essays for students, but do people do that nowadays?

I use to do basic websites for companys, thats any idea. It's just getting customers...

 

Any ideas?

I do websites for local business's and clubs and may continue to do this if I still have the time (just landed my 1st techie job in a local school in north Birmingham) but will have to see how it goes.

 

I don't have huge out goings as I still live at home but a little extra is always nice I guess!!

Yh i have a few jobs myself that i do in my spare time,

 

- design website's for smaller company's which tbh with you i dont get that often as its not somewhere i specialise in... but its not dead i do get request's

 

- I do my Xbox 360 Gaming LAN Events, but thats more like a large company that i co-own so its nothing really something you could just do.

 

- And just sometimes i go and help other schools out in birmingham, like when they have big projects on and need an extra pair of hands.

I'm FT here & I run a small IT business from home which takes up all my spare time (evenings, weekends and holidays). I advertise via my website and a small ad every week in one of the local newspapers. It's great because I can usually pick and choose the jobs that I want. Most of my customers are domestic but I now do work for a number of businesses too.

 

I do everything from fixing computers to IT training (I used to be an IT trainer before I became a techie).

I do a bit of video editing and dvd authoring. Also some filming as well but I can't afford a decent HD camera so I'm getting less of that work.

I do a little freelance IT support for a couple of small establishments I've built up over the years, but nothing serious, and it's only evenings and weekends. Unlike a lot of people here it seems, my contract is full-time, so I'm here all through the school breaks, including the summer.

Full time here so I dont get to work anywhere else, otherwise i would have done some contract work with SCC or something. I use to do the night shift there in Config.

 

Man seems a few of you work all the time either at school or on your own thing.. im too lazy to do any other work then at school.

I'm only term time at my new job and just think that instead of being sat on my arse for most of it i could earn some money whilst im at it. I only want something simple and temporary, thats why i was thinking word processing or something.

The caretaker here has a son at uni who supplements his cr@p grants/loans by gold farming/character building in online games like wow for people who are too lazy to do it themselves.

 

He even sells in-game stuff on eBay although I believe they're clamping down on stuff like that nowadays.

Don't forget to check your contract that you are actually allowed to take on a second job, some council contracts prohibit this.

You may also need to declare it on the schools register of interests as there could be a conflict of interests.

@Little_Miss: Seems like you will be hard pushed find anything now, other then some consultancy work or something... you could flyer drop the area you're in offering home users support. Let us know how you get on.

 

@tech_guy: I didnt think anyone still did that in this country as you get companies in china who have ppl employed justo do stuff like that. I dont even think ppl build chars to sell anymore but its not really my scene so who knows..

 

@teejay: Its abit harsh for a council to restrict your earning potential, is that even legal. Naturally you have to declare that you have other work (if relevant) but working pro rata and not being able to work anywhere else is way harsh. Dont think Birmingham does this tho as im sure i would have noticed it in my contract..

Yes it is legal for things like if it has a direct effect on your ability to do the job you have been employed for, there is a conflict of interest, breaks things like the European working times directive rules or if there are political sensitivities.

It is always best to be on the safe side and check with your HT or HR before undertaking any extra work.

I earn an extra few grand a year creating the odd website, and computing work. Im actually going away tomorrow down to wales and london to check over my grandads company computer system.

 

Although I dont have permission in writing, the HT here has given me permssion as long as it dosen't interfer with my job at the school.

I would try and get some work IT contracting, use the skills you have! Whether that is with local companies or providing home support is up to you, but you could take out an ad in the local paper. If you get a basic temp job you will be on a poor wage and bored out your mind.

I have a small child so I have no energy for extra work. But its not true that school employees aren't allowed other jobs. Certainly our LEA doesn't stop people. My network manager has his own business doing IT support privately. Its great in that when you get some pesky teacher wanting me to fix their home PC I can just tell them that the network manager will fix it for a fee.

 

A lot of the TAs where I work do respite care during the holidays or weekends for children with special needs. Its not something I would choose to do, but it shows that plenty of people do have second jobs.

It depends on the LEA and the school as to whether you can do a second job. Yes they cannot stop you without a good reason as this would be an unfair restriction of trade. However, if there is a conflict of interest, it breaks the European Working Time Directive, or it affects your ability to do your current job or work your contracted hours then they do have fair grounds.

For instance, if you are in a role where you are purchasing IT equipment and your second job involved doing work for a supplier you use then there would be a conflict of interest.

I'm not saying don't take a second job, HT's and LEA's are very cooperative with taking a second job, but it is best to be upfront with them, that's all I'm saying.

Outside of my work at school I do a few hours work each week, at the weekend, for another company. Gives me a bit of extra pocket money!

I work full time but still need the extra money. I'd do repair work but there are so many people chasing this kind of job it's not worth the bother. I'm now considering bar work for eves and weekends. you take anything with a family and house to keep.

I am a declutterer when I am not doing the techie thing. I advise people on the best ways to cut down on clutter and actually go and help them sort things out so that they can cope better. I'm not one of these people who make others chuck everything out and start again, I just get them to see what they really want to keep, how to keep it and how to maximise storage space etc.
