laptop not getting internet at home

We have an issue here where staff have laptops that are on our schools domain and when they take it home they cannot access the internet (not that i particulary keen on them using internet on schools laptop). The only way we can get them talking to there own ISP is to remove the laptop from the domain.

 

Does anyone know the reason why this might be, I can only think of a group policy somewhere but I cant seem to find it.

I took proxy settings out of internet options. I also tried firefox, still no joy. I will try again tonight with another browser.

I agree with Mcshammer_dj - there's probably a better way around it, but I use "Proxy Switcher Lite". It's free and sits in the system tray: a right-click can switch between "School" (proxy) and "Direct Connection".

 

Most of the teachers even understand it! (Though I have had to set up a "Direct Connection" called "Home" for a couple ).

Rather than something that staff have to remomber to set, how about using a pac file to set the proxy?

Something like to following could be used so that the user does not have to do anything..

Pac File -

 

function FindProxyForURL(url, host)

{

i = myIpAddress() /* get ipaddress of PC */

 

/* If in School Local Subnet - Use Local Proxy */

if (isInNet(i,"1.2.3.0","255.255.255.0"))

{ return "PROXY 192.168.1.1:8080"; }

return "DIRECT";

}

 

 

End of file.

The above needs to be changed so that the isInNet has the appropriate address and mask for the school network so that it can tell if address 'i' is in school.

The 192.168.1.1 becomes the school proxy address, and the 8080 the port number.

 

If not is school, the browser will use 'DIRECT' - ie no proxy.

The above could be extended to multiple proxies for multiple address ranges.

 

To use the proxy it must be specified in the LAN Settings as an Automatic Configuration Script. It should have the syntax

file://c:\dir\proxy.pac

which says it is a file with the relevent filepath.

Good script. The only problem i see if a member of staff happens to have the same address range as your at home.

 

I would make the script ping something if there is no replies then set the proxy.

I will try all the above suggestions and thank you for all your input. I have removed all proxy settings and the ip settings are all set to get addressess automatically, there must be something deep in the registry that is stopping it. ipconfig /all shows all of my home details and not schools

Run nslookup and query a site you've NOT visited on the laptop. See where it looks for the answer.

Ok this is weird. I installed the proxy switcher and still no joy and then I tried installing firefox to try that and all of a sudden it works. I uninstalled firefox and proxy switcher and it still works....strange!!
