USBDLM problem

Just tried to install this on a new machine - installs OK but I can't get it to start no matter what.

Has anyone come across this and if so, what do I do?

Or has anyone got another solution?

This machine will be in constant use by different people with USB sticks so I need to have an automatic assignment of an unused drive letter or they will be unusable

Has it installed correctly? Check to see if the USBDLM service is present, and what it's status is. Try restarting the service if it is there.

Did you set up a configuration file for it or just unzip and run the service install/start option? I seem to remember it getting annoyed with me for not copying the example config template over to the correct name before starting it. (USBDLM_sample.ini to USBDLM.ini)

Changed the sample name, having put in the drive letter I want it to use.

It is installed and present in services - but it still wont start

We use that here, i have a MSI that goes down to all new PC's and sets everything up for me. It installs all the config files on the c: drive and creates the service and sets it to start automatically. Only problem i have found is if users log in with their usb drive plugged in they don't get their home drive because the drive letter clashes. I suppose i should change it really to eliminate this, but got other things on at the moment.

I don't know of anything else with the reputation of USBDLM - are you sure you renamed the sample file correctly and haven't been caught out by the old Windows hiding the file extension from you trick?

 

Any errors appearing in the event log when you try and start the service?

make sure it's on a local disk before running install - it refuses for me if I try to run it even off our mapped "IT" share. Local or nothing.

i am still using this version i hacked to apply the drive letters in the registry.

 

its an old one but it has never let me down.

 

drive letters are P: Q: R:

 

but you can edit them if you open the msi with orca

 

go to the registry table, sort by key and just change the letters to ones of you choice.

 

further down the table is a section for excluded drive letters (your mapped drives)

Thanks Sirbendy - I thought it WAS local, but, well, it wasn't! It is now, and it works fine

 

Thanks to all for your help - I think just having people to ask helps calm me down and follow through things a bit more logically. (And me an ex systems test engineer,too)

If it does not work for me once configuring the ini file and obviously renaming the ini file to the relevant name ( inc extension etc ) then I use the batch file to un install and then re install it ( making sure to copy the ammended ini file that you changed and renamed earlier )
