QFT! I agree, it definately seems like someone high up in BECTA doesn't like the ribbon and is giving Office 2007 some very unwarranted bad press!

Seems you missed the point entirely. This entire issue is about vendor lock-in. Everything Microsoft has been doing has the goal of forcing it's users into the need to upgrade every time they release a new version of software.

 

No-one has mentioned the ribbon.

 

It is not unwarranted bad press. It is hugely warranted, considering how much money schools hand over to Microsoft every year. Along with the way in which they run the Schools Agreement (every machine capable of running the software you wish to license must be licensed, regardless of it is actually going to run it or not). These are very poor practices for education to have to buy into.

 

This is one of the exact reasons I am working on the possibility of a Linux roll-out at some point in the future.

One of the good things Becta has done is to take a stance against MS's anti-competitive and anti-interoperability practices in the education market and promote open source software.

 

(Of course then it made the bizarre decision to award the contract for its open source project to an unknown company with no track recored in open source software.)

 

Unwarranted bad press? No. Trolls? No.
