Zoom7000 Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 I'm planning on setting up a new website with some friends using Joomla and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good UK based host. We will also need a domain name and preferably email forwarding. Also it would useful if the host supports Joomla so we don't have to install it onto the space ourselves. The website is purely for charitable purposes so I will be paying wholly or partially for hosting so obviously I will be looking at basic package pricing. Upto a maximum of £25/year if possible, the "clook" website Watermoss mentioned has it's basic package at £50/year. If it is the case that this is the general pricing then I may stretch to that figure, or consider hosting my own server. But in the interim I would much rather go for a hosted solution.

SimpleSi Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 another recommendation for one.com as a very low cost way to dip toes into water. I've setup 2 joomla websites with them, one for a local netball club and one for a small fitness business in the last 12 mnths - only costs £10 to setup. FTP access can be slightly problematic at times as they have a 100 simultaneous users at a time limit but its at least as good as CLEO regards Simon

It separates the domain name from the webhost. This makes it much easier to point your domain at a different server should the need arise.
EduTech Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 I always have used Name.com as i think there control panel is excellent, saying that i have used 123-Reg for domain's in which someone transfered over to me, and there control panel is ok, but it does take a little getting used to i suppose. From what I've heard support is terrible, prices are OK for .UK but for any other extension they are not that cheap. I assume you are saying register the domains with 123-REG to keep them separate from the host? I've always disagreed with this statement not because we offer domain registration (we make peanuts on them anyway) but because if you don't have any faith/trust in your chosen hosting provider for your domain registration needs why bother to use them at all? Just ensure your chosen provider registers the domains in your own name, address, email etc and you should not have any problems moving them away. Agreed! I'm shocked that a fellow 'professional' in the hosting business agrees with such a statement.

Just to clarify this was a misunderstanding on "Wallgo"'s part, our servers are already very secure. However as he has a hosting package on a Windows package certain recommended requirements for Joomla/Moodle are not available. We fully support Joomla on our Linux Hosting.

I recomend them because I've used them for around 3 years and never had any issues, so i have no reason to dislike them. I wasn't agreeing to the fact you should always keep your domain seperate, because as you pointed out, if you have no trust registering a domain with them why would you trust them for hosting. Never had a problem with 123-reg, and there are a few other registrars it would seem are also fine. (I also know of hosting providers / resellers who use them and just add their commision on top). I would still recommend separation from the host because quite often ,especially in the entry market (even on dedicated) you are balancing 'faith' with price. I may hear that XXXX provider rocks, but if I can get a similar spec at a quarter the price I may well take the risk on that, especially if it isn't for something mission critical (which it invariably isn't) - heck the VLE can afford to go down because worse case I can switch the DNS back to a local server while it gets sorted - a level of control not always offered by hosting providers with a vested interest in your business. I think the best advice is "Expect the best, plan for the worst, and prepare to be surprised". It's prudent to take precautions. YMMV.
