We've got a bunch of new whiteboards in classrooms, I've installed the software and drivers on the local machine, rather than making a package on the network, as we have always done.

But to see the software, the teacher has to be a priviledged user, hasn't been a problem in the past because it used to be one teacher per classroom (therefore machine)...but now we have one classroom for one class, so there will be at least 5 or 6 teachers needing it in any one classroom...

I'm concerned about the ability for the teachers to access the C, drop stuff onto the desktop etc...

I may be being thick as two short planks...are there other ways of giving standard users access to locally installed software, without compromising the workstation..

Currently after building I install locally. This is because I could never get Smart packaged up properly. Then I take a restore image.

Teachers can't actually launch the software but Smart runs at startup and puts an icon in the systray. All the functions can be accessed from there.

ActiveStudio should do the same if I remember correctly. Do you not even get the systray icon?

  • Make shortcut to ACTIVstudio, probably: C:\Program Files\ACTIV Software\ActivstudioPE3\AS3PE.exe.
  • Copy shortcut to RM Shortcut Bank.
  • Create program set or open existing one for relevant users.
  • Add shortcut to it from the Shortcut Bank.

- OR -

  • Just place the shortcut in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Desktop folder.

But we now have a package for ACTIVstudio 3 and the drivers as we have around 35-40 IWBs.

  • Thanks 1

This is exactly how we do it, and without making a teacher priv user they get the icon in the system tray from where they can do everything.

It's Promethean ActivStudio.

How do you do it, build a package and allocate?

If you contact Promeathean they will send you a CC3 ready package. It may not be the latest version but it will suit your needs.

Hi, dont use CC3 just vanilla windows. Make sure you have the latest version of the software and board driver (3.7) as this seems to work much better for non priv users. All I do is install as domain admin then make sure the driver can see the board correctly and put the icons in the all users desktop folder.

On a side note they are releasing version 4 in January which is quite a bit different in look and concept I have been told, they can't really talk about it at the moment before the big launch. Plus it is still being worked on so that January release may well slip.
