Mac Mini 256GB out of storage due to Logic and Garageband sound files including system data updates.

Hi,

 

Has anyone experience issues where the Mac Mini's would run out of storage due to the both Logic and Garageband program and sound files have been installed and now we are unable to do any OS updates. Not to mention this is also taken up by 150GB of system data which is not possible to remove. We are using Jamf School to manage our fleet of Mac's and any advice would be appreciated.

IIRC, and you may need to look at how you set this up, you can now have your Logic Loops on a network share and tell it to use that instead of putting it locally, but I haven't done this, as our iMacs haven't complained with their 512gb storage

Yes, we saw this on MacOS 10.13, and they'd continue eating space until there was nothing left. Other versions like 12 were better.

 

Could never find where it all actually went, only rebuilding them would fix it (and changing OS version, but that's not an option for you!)

Had this issue before, as @BKGarry mentioned, we put the sounds on a network share

 

Edit: This was way back and we ended up having issues with bandwidth, once we moved over to M1 iMacs we moved them back onto the device.

How have you done this? if you could share some info that would be really appreciated!

 

Is an SSD share GB link suitable for 30x or more macs?

If you can get the network storage plugged into the same switch as the 30x Macs and get it on a 10G connection it shoooullddd be ok but may struggle when all 30 are accessing it.

I have not done this, as not needed to, you may be able to do it with symbolic links or the like, or you have to set it when you open logic 12, but I would also look at what happens when you reinstall the mac with the latest OS from scratch and see what happens to the storage.

I have 10GB/2.5GB/1GB Links ready but i'm presuming the mac would cache it when connected so its not constant it would be gradual?

I rather have the music teachers need select sounds only but they want EVERYTHING!

I think you can move where the files are in Logic. If I recall they have to be downloaded to the local machine then moved using one of it's features.

Issue is that we do not have the school budget to buy 20 hard drives.

Would it work off a share? Got enough free storage for 20 different shares?

It's possible but then we were trying to reduce the number of storage servers and move everything onto the cloud.

wont work with logic unfortunately! i have thought about a dedicated NAS for this but logic yeah wont work well on cloud.

 

Move everything onto cloud youll always have a server for something be it paxton, inventry etc... so youll more resources for logic.

If it logically can't be done with the resources you have then its either;

 

A) Explain to Music teaches that they can only have X amount of storage locally to have sound library

B) Get approval to buy the storage (which is unlikely so it will have to be A!)

Whilst it's nice to have access to every sound in Logic, etc. you don't have to download it all. Periodically wipe every sound pack and let them download as needed? Perhaps automate that monthly, if possible?

Yeh could do.

We found that seemingly between a Logic version change it reinstalled itself. We MacOS with AD accounts, so were able to prune old profiles to a point, but then had to wipe and reinstall. Suffice to say our next Mac purchase will have bigger drives.
