Hi all

Just after some advice please. I'm a teacher and slightly paranoid as I'd misspelt a common word and it was flagged up in the IT department. The word in question is count.

Just wondering if it's an obvious typo are there parameters for it not to be raised. Just found the approach rather unprofessional.

Apologies if the purpose of the forum is not this.

I don’t think any of us here can comment on your school’s procedures or people, and I could ask just how ‘obvious’ it really was that it was a typo… but I think I’d expect anyone to handle an incident like this with some discretion.

of course, some people are insensitive and engage mouth before brain - you should speak to their line manager if you think someone was inappropriate about a simple mistake.

I agree w/ the above. Context is important, etc. If you were on Google and typed in "count" (minus the 'o') - then, yes - chances are that'd be picked up by someone, somewhere, at some point depending on your Web Filtering.

If you were, for example typing in a Word Document and forgot the 'O' (and I saw it) - I'd probably laugh and move on. If it was clearly nothing malicious, and otherwise a cause for concern - that'd be the end of it (if I was running shop and there were no policies explicitly addressing instances similar to your situation).

I remember someone did (close to) what you described back to me on my PC when I was a Student in the Early 2000's. I went to the toilet (and, our Network Manager at the time didn't enable 'Lock Computer') so the machine was unlocked. Nothing ever came of it. Context and discretion are important in any scenario.

As a TL;DR - I wouldn't loose any sleep over it.

To give any further, more specific advice - you'd have to disclose what you were doing at the time you made the error.

Who knows, you network manager may well be a member on this site! Failing all-else, you'll likely gain some feedback from those who do the NM role day-to-day.

This wad exactly my inkling in that count is a regular word so it's an obvious typo on a word doc. I just found it uncomfortable given the words vulgar connotations from a man to a female.

Appreciate the responses.

Similar to Assume and exactly the same as you with count to name just two and many other words I can't remember right now.

I think crap I've typed it wrong and just get on with the day. It clearly wasn't anything but a typo ad not sure any well-run IT dept really has that much free time to worry about stuff like this when it's a typo.

It you typed it a few hundred times in a day/week, maybe it'd raise an eyebrow. Otherwise it's the DSL's job.

I once triggered an alert after a visit to bong.com .Was a slightly embarrassing conversation with the DSL.

Tend to avoid bing and stick with google these days :😂

We don't apply "those sort of word alerts" to staff, just pupils.  How can you raise a CPOMS or whatever about a pupil if you can't quote that they said (if they verballed such a word to or about somebody), if you can't quote the exact word as an adult?

We wouldn't even follow up a genuine typo from a pupil, and just looking at the screen cap tells you if it was or not.

We have monitoring on all the school comptuers regardless. It depends on the system, but with the Securus setup we use, we can have exclusions for specific apps/sites, like not caputring from CPOMS or recapturing the securus alerts.

I'd be more concerned it was the IT department receiving the flagged alerts to be honest.

With the KCSiE changes we tried to get the DSL to take it on, but as an AHT she has so many other responsibilities that it went back to us.

Here LM of IT has always been the DSL (who is also sometimes Head of HR when it's not a DH or the HT). We treat it (keyword/behaviour/communication compliance/web filter log alerts) like the helpdesk, except we get to delegate actions to SLT/DSL.  DSL reviews everything at the end of the day, but we handle the minute to minute admin, and sometimes initial investigation. Staff are not monitored for keywords but they are for communication compliance.

The whole thing is overseen by HR and DSL at all times and our pragmatism about alerts is guided by the SLT member(s) with responsibility.

Between this and Data Protection, IT is basically compliance these days.
