AlphamaleZed Posted February 11 Posted February 11 I have reached the stage where i am looking to move elsewhere, however I cant find any down in south east whats going on? Looking for something closer to home either same salary or more of a promotional route which i am unable to get here (11 years strong too!) what are your experiences with moving on and finding the job in general? I haven't looked for 11 years so this is all sort of new to me coming up 30 too so not too old i hope lol.
TheHyperTechie Posted February 11 Posted February 11 I am in the same position but based in the South West. IT jobs appear to be few and far between, especially within education at the moment. It is very frustrating, as I regularly see amazing jobs posted here, but they are just too far away.

Yep same here haha. build up the excitement, wow this job looks perfect then let down by being London or up north lol. I know some places have shifted so the net mans are doing data with a split role but then nothing new opens up. I have looked around for 3 months but might just pack IT overall if I don’t find one by summer. Everyone’s like wow your on a lot of money, loads of jobs etc… but the reality is far from different. The market is entry level or really high level nothing really in between with a fair salary. Either private sector or go on the tools in the future. Thought the industry be great. 1
TheHyperTechie Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Totally agree, the amount of times I think about leaving the sector! I may leave eventually to learn a trade, I am thinking gas/electrical engineer. I also think that a lot of schools, trusts, utilise MSPs more now. It's easier to get a company to come in and sort out their IT then go through the hassle of internal hiring.

Same as me electrical or plumbing more towards the electrical side. Similar to how networking infrastructure works just a lot less cables! 1

Unfortunately if you want the money and/or progression sometimes you have to travel for it and yes I am within the M25 in a large town. I'm in the lucky position I work from home 3 days a week but if that was 5 days onsite I'd have to reconsider options. Edited February 12 by Davit2005

I prefer to be in office then home i'm way too hyperactive lol!

paulkerton Posted February 13 Posted February 13 I've started to notice a lot of Shadow jobs in schools all of a sudden. They've got to advertise them, but they send out communications about them really kinda too quickly for them to have done a proper assessment of the applicants, and must have someone in mind already.

I literally had this! I think it was more internal role. I noted my years of experience and they didn't even call to interview where as others have without noting the years of experience.

If you don't fancy industry, you could look at higher education, NHS, County Council (they have quite a lot of IT unrelated to schools) or an MSP. All of them pay better than schools and often more scope for car development and a lot have local opportunities. mthomas08 Posted February 16 Posted February 16 There has been quite a few techie jobs popping up in the SE plus IT Director jobs. I'm not seeing many NM types though. Thing is, if you find something good.. would you leave it? Unlikely. And in education there is only one position available which generally is the IT Director ones (MATs). My location is awful. All the better jobs in the last 2 years which I could easily apply for are 45+ mins away at least. Towards London area where I used to live. At the moment I can't really sacrifice driving for 2 hours or so because of my daughter but once she is capable of walking to her school it will change.
mikes Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I'm in South Wales and I saw quite a few tech support / admin jobs in my rural area a lot more than I thought which suprised me ! I didn't see anything in education but if I was gonna leave here I doubt I'd go for another EDU job tbh. I'd want to branch out see what something different is like. I wanted to see what it would be like to get into development work but I think that might be a lot harder as I don't have the skill set that I do as a tech. But it seems a better field to work in imo
