Screen Casting - Direct Wi-Fi

Looking for recommendations on the best way to achieve this.

 

We have a screen in our conference room that we need to wirelessly display to, but we don't want it to be discoverable on the network as a whole (this obviously rules out network based broadcast devices like Chromecast and Apple TV). The solution would need to work on predominantly Windows devices, but preferably not need an application installing on the device, as guests probably won't be able to install software on their devices. I've done lots of reading but can't really find a product that ticks all the boxes.

 

All suggestions welcome.

There is another system called PushShare - a receiving unit that plugs into the the screen, then a dongle that plugs into the laptop, not software needed. It is point-to-point so will sit off your network. They are quite costly so i would try and get a demo of one if you can!

Windows has built in support for Miracast, just press win+k and pick the device

No information on the protocol used, frequencies etc. Few reviews saying difficult to get it to pair - good luck!

 

Network based stuff is ok if you turn on PIN codes - so to join the screen you need the PIN code displayed on the screen. You can usually set this up to refresh every hour, giving a good level of security.

Work fine with Miracast and the Win+K shortcut. Works with most android devices without an app just using the baked in 'cast' function but some devices without native cast need an app. Not tried it on iOS but works fine with Airplay on MacOS.

 

There is a button push needed to move between cast modes so you can't just hide them up the back of the TV and forget about them. I have them stuck to the side or the bottom of the sreens with agressive sticky velcro with a label on the front to show where it is!

They do seem to take more power than they say on the box. They say a USB port with 500ma will be fine, but we found that plugged into the allegedly 500ma service port on the screen that they were unreliable - they powered on and displayed a home screen but often wouldn't connect, or worked for a bit and then flaked out. Plugging them into their own 2a USB mains adapter solved a lot of instability problems.

 

One other thing to be aware of, half of them came with A-Micro USB cable, a few came without cables at all and 2 of them are USB-C power input not micro USB!

 

They don't have great range is the only thing I would say - less than 10m, so you can't really wander around with your device.

Seems pretty good so far but not using it in anger yet.

We use AirServer Connect 3 boxes for our critical rooms where we need rock solid wireless connectivity and these deliver but are expensive. Support all major platforms and pin codes can be implemented. I use mircast over infrastructure as these has been very reliable and go through our core firewall so easy to manage which devices can see what and connect so removes the need for even passcodes. Downside is someone connects and forgets to disconnect and walls from one site of the site to their other whole still broadcasting there screen, ugh.

We use ScreenBeam for Wireless Display. 960s in the classrooms and 1000 Edu for larger areas (sports halls, conference rooms etc).

 

We used the 1000 at BETT last week when we delivered our Live Classroom for LGFL, worked flawlessly, even at BETT.

 

Interestingly, I was told that Microsoft was using them also on their stand...

 

They're centrally managed and can do a lot more than just WiFi Direct, model depending, but we just use the Miracast and Wireless Touch.
