New DFE Scheme?

Does anyone know if there is a "coming soon" or currently running DFE laptop scheme and how to access it?

Nothing rumoured, although I imagine if something was imminent it would have been mentioned in the budget last week.

 

I think the DfE are still playing catch-up financially from COVID and RAAC so they'll not be any such projects for a long time if ever.

The last Pandemic began in 2019 (hence the 19 in COVID19) and the one previous to that was 1918 so on average the next Pandmic is due around 2118ish so that's the most likely time the DfE would consider more laptops...

You can bet your bottom dollar whoever awared the contract to geobook was a director of the geobook company as that's how all that stuff tends to work.

In seriousness we still use the Dell one's for exam laptops (word processing) & they're ok doing that.

I tend to agree about the Geobooks and their quality, but the intention was a short term fix to use the devices for familes without the technology to access remote learning from home for what may have been ultimately a short period of time.

 

What hasn't helped is once the pandemic was over, that all schools thought they could add the devices onto their networks to save having to spend additonal funds on IT refresh.

 

A basic device allowing access to work from home with access to little other than a browser was fine, schools wanting to teach the curriculum on a domained joined PC in a school with very little WiFi coverage to start with - not fine !

Thats what chromebooks were for as back then you could pick up dells or lenovos for 140 ish each and they would have still worked perfectly now.
