What's the oldest bit of kit still in use in your school?

We have a circa 1984 BBC model B running a miling machine here. And we are a Technology College!

I knew it was going to happen! Just walked in to a classroom two doors down from my office and sitting next to the whiteboard are two Tiny's still in use... A P-II and an AMD Athlon 1Ghz.

 

Where the hell did the P-II tower come from ?!?

We have an old Cyrix 166 attached to a milling machine, I remember it arriving in 1997-98 when I was 1st form...

When I started we had BBCs, 486s galore, dot matrix printers and s on. All long gone now.

 

The oldest running kit are P2/350 DAN workstations that were bought for us in 2000. Running XPSP2, were workstations up until we retired them a few months back..I daresay there is still a couple somewhere.

 

Dell Optiplex GX110s (P3/700ish) that just won't die and rarely give trouble..We're looking to retire all sub 1.4Ghz kit this summer. Our kit only has to last another 12 months anyway, then it's off to the new site with new kit throughout.

 

We've just retooled CADCAM and the LRC with some "end of life" kit from our parent academy...it's a whole new world! Their "end of life" kit is as follows..

 

Dell Precision 340 Workstations

512mb RDRAM

Nvidia Quadro cards

3.06Ghz CPUs (not HT by the looks)

60gb disks

17" TFTs.

 

I tell you, if ANYONE dares to say "it's slow"...I'll beat them with the most nail-bound stick I can lay my hands on..

 

All the "old" kit from the room (P4 1.4-3.0ghz, 256-512mb) will filter into classrooms as and when. I personally was to keep one of the DAN machines, fill it with disks and use something like FreeNAS on it.

We binned most of our really old stuff a couple of years ago but at home I have an ageing 386SX running at an amazing 16MHz. It has a 40MB HDD and 8MB RAM. It runs DOS 5 and Windows 3.11. Heady stuff!

All the acorns have been cleared out I think, no doubt there is something ancient being used somewhere though.

 

Ive got a stack of Acer Travelmate 200's that I use for troubleshooting at switches...Celeron's with 128MB ram, but they've got serial ports so they're more useful than any new laptops!

 

Also the Geography departments weather station equipment is pretty old, as is the random CRT screen mounted on a wall up there - its the only one in the school now

We've just taken out of service 2 Apple LaserWriters 16/600 Printers.

 

They're both still working - it was just time to replace them.

I can beat that - I have an Olivetti 286 in the attic at home, again with DOS 5 and Windows 3.1. Still works as far as I know! And the miracle is that it's really small - one of the first SFF PC's I reckon! It's about the same size as the small RM desktops:

Not quite like that, but kind of similar.

 

The monitor is the same, but the case isn't quite the same. An slightly earlier or later iteration of the same series I think. PCS something or other rings a bell!

I've got two part time techs, one is 65 and the other is about to turn 71!

 

The 71 year old is such a hard worker, set him a task and he'll rattle through it in no time at all!
