NT Backup on Server 2008

Is it possible to get NT backup to backup only one folder on Server 2008? If so i can't find it, i can only find how to backup the entire server and i dont want that really.

NTBackup on XP/2003 by default starts in the really not so useful wizard mode. Switch to Advanced mode > Backup, cancel the wizard again and you should then see your directory structure.

 

From here can select entire drives, folders or files.

Technet article "here" about Windows server backup, NT Backup has been replaced in 2008, and looking through a few places the have removed the option for single folder backup

Someone should have told Microsoft that we don't all have T1 internet connections for automated offsite backups.

It makes me think eventually when I go down the Server 2008 route, to keep a Server 2003 member server just for backups. I don't understand why MS have demoted a perfectly working application.

What's worse is any trusty ntbackup batch scripts everyones made over the years will no longer work either. Migrating looks complex, because the new Window's backup doesn't have a plain text log file either, so that really messes up simple batch files that check/email log files.

for those interested regarding backup in 2008. It kind of gives the MS thinking behind the whole move. Some of it makes sense- tape backups are a pain in the neck. But I think for now they are a necessary evil.

 

Still, it's nice to know what the thinking was behind the decision!

MS were asked about it and DB can confirm they were asked about it as I asked them at the Manchester event they held on Server 2008 and DB was with me at this event.

 

There answer was more and more places are ditching tape as storage requirements are bigger than tape, plus costs of these new super sized tape libraries are getting rather high compaired to options like Volume Shadow Copies setup and D2D backup options.

 

You can still use a tape option, but to do so you need to use this program: http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/dataprotectionmanager/en/us/default.aspx Which MS said on the day to Education is something rather small in cost they claimed (I haven't researched the cost myself so be interesting to know what the cost actually is!).

 

To make you also in the picture, they have taken Tape Support out of the new releases of Small Business Server (they have 2 version Small and Essential for the 2008 release) so they are doing more than "screwing" up the Education and commercial sector, they are doing it to Small Business as well!!!

To be fair, you can re-instate NTBackup if you want.

 

You have to copy the exe and a few dll's off a Win2003 machine - but they don't even need to be registered, just present in the path so you can pluck it out later if you want too.

 

It's handy if you have any legacy .bkf files on a NAS somewhere that you suddenley find you have to recover from. Like we did.
