Boredguy Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Since we got our Ricoh Pro 8310S last Easter, we've noticed that any copying done on the device does not report back to Papercut, which is a bit of an issue since it's our primary Reprographics device. All our other copiers are Kyoceras and behave fine, so guessing it's either a limitation with the copier or a setting kicking around somewhere that needs adjusting. Anyone else got a Pro 8310S that happily reports the copies/scans back to Papercut? Thankfully at least it's find reporting the prints sent from the PC.
Michael Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Have you upgraded the firmware on the Ricoh? Given other brands are OK, this would be my starting point. Various Papercut releases do require firmware to be upgraded for various functionality to continue working.
PotNoodleTech Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 I've got a Pro 8300s that report everything fine. Your unit would have been installed by ricoh and their engineers usually set the papercut stuff up correctly at the time of install, so have you called Ricoh to let them know they didnt set it up right and to get it fixed? It's the easiest way as they literally do hundreds of them probably get it sorted in 30 minutes.
Boredguy Posted June 14, 2024 Author Posted June 14, 2024 Our engineers were mainly trained on Kyocera kit, and at the time we were the only site on their patch with a 8310, which is why I though I'd check if anyone else has it reporting copy jobs. I can see it's tracked all the pages for the user account on the actual photocopier itself, but not fed it back along with the departmental account into Papercut.
PotNoodleTech Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Fair enough but you have a support contract with Ricoh on a unit like that right so you could get it fixed same/next day through them?
dapaulio Posted June 16, 2024 Posted June 16, 2024 We just had all Ricoh installed couple weeks ago and one thing I asked the engineer was to lock the embed mf. It could be that they using copy thru the copier gui without going thru the papercut app. I think you have to disable the home button to prevent from what I recall Call to Ricoh sure will resolve this for you
pklump Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 (edited) Which copy application(s) do you have available for use? On the Ricohs we have in our general lab areas, we leave only the "Copier (Classic)" app available for copy functions. Copies made using this MFP app *should* get tracked in PaperCut if everything is set up correctly. Some of the other copy apps that come with the Ricoh MFPs might not work 100% correctly as far as PaperCut being able to track their jobs. On the MFPs in our computer labs, we remove all apps/icons from the touchscreen screens except: PaperCut MF Copier (Classic) Settings Edited June 17, 2024 by pklump

pklump Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 Copier(Classic) is what we use when going via the Device functions, but doesn't log anything back. Will see if I can get our engineers to try and resolve it over the summer It's possible that something isn't configured correctly on the MFP so that the copy jobs can be logged by PaperCut. Do you know how the embedded PaperCut software was installed on this MFP? Going back a few years, the only install process was a more manual one, where a lot of changes had to be made manually on the MFP. Now, PaperCut provide a GUI-based "Remote Operation Client" tool that handles the initialization/configuration/installation process. Another note: in general, if we ever run into issues with the PaperCut embedded software on our Ricohs, we'll go through an uninstall/reboot/install process and then see if the issues clears up. If you're not familiar with the uninstall process, you can find info in this whitepaper from PaperCut (I assume you're using the SmartSDK version instead of the older SDK/J version): PaperCut MF - Ricoh SmartSDK Embedded Manual
Boredguy Posted June 17, 2024 Author Posted June 17, 2024 The engineers managed to install it remotely after a lot of fun talking to support since we had to disable some of the login functions on the unit, but it is the SmartSDK version. I want to get version 24 of papercut installed next month anyway, so might see if they can pop in and redo it completely since it's normally a quiet time for them.
MYK-IT Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 @Boredguy Have you checked that the device's configuration within PaperCut has 'track & control copying enabled?'
Boredguy Posted June 18, 2024 Author Posted June 18, 2024 @Boredguy Have you checked that the device's configuration within PaperCut has 'track & control copying enabled?' Track & control copying and Track & control scanning has been enabled since we installed Papercut MF on all the queues, which is why I wasn't sure if it was a limitation on the machine (doesn't help that we only have the 1 Ricoh in the MAT cause I wanted something that could do over 100ppm and Kyocera couldn't provide that without going to the very very large and expensive models)
Boredguy Posted June 18, 2024 Author Posted June 18, 2024 Found the issue, thanks to the guide @pklump posted. Tracking Permission had not been enabled on the copier under Device Management > Configuration > Print Volume Use Limitation. Can now see our Reprographics tech as got jobs logged against a departmental area this morning after activating it

Do you know if the embedded software was installed via the GUI tool? If so, when doing the 'configuration' portion via the GUI, that setting should have been set. Of course, there's nothing stopping anyone from making config tweaks after the initial config/install process.
Boredguy Posted June 18, 2024 Author Posted June 18, 2024 It was installed via the remote tool if I remember correctly.
PaperCutterBrenda Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 Hi there Team! PaperCutter Brenda here, hoping to chime in a little help. The Pro 8310S is a supported device with PaperCut, so it sounds like a possible configuration issue. It could be something incredibly simple, like you didn't check the box to 'track & control copying.' (see screenshot below) If that doesn't resolve things, feel free to reach out to your reseller or for further assistance!

That was suggested by another member, but was already enabled. It was the fact that the engineers had left Tracking Permission on the copier in the default off status. Turning it on this morning resulted in copy job logs getting reported by the reprographics tech, so some departments are going to be upset when their monthly bills start being correct from now on
PaperCutterBrenda Posted June 19, 2024 Posted June 19, 2024 Great to hear (well, maybe not for those monitoring budgets)! Glad it's all sorted!
