Office 365 - Forward only external emails?

A staff member has left and SLT would like external emails only to be forwarded on to his forwarding email address, is it possible to do this? I cant see an option in 365 Admin or in the Mailbox forwarding.

Can you log into their Outlook and set a forwarding rule?

 

Creating rules can be very granular and would think this is possible.

Yeah, I can do that but I don't see a option to forward external emails only?

You need to create 2 rules, First rule should match any mail sent that include your domain the senders email address and does what ever you want with it, delete, move to folder etc. It should then stop processing further rules. You then create a second rule below it that forwards all emails to the forwarding address.

No need for 2 rules. Just create the forward rule with an exception for internal emails. Either "except with specific words in the sender's email address" or "except if the sender is from the specified address book" (and use the global address book)

Ah yes, the exception option doesn't present itself until you've fleshed out the condition and action in Outlook on the web.

This mail address is owned by the organisation then I would think hard about just blindly forwarding emails on to an external address, for two reasons firstly the external sender is thinking that they are contacting someone within your organisation and secondly you need to be sure that any communications that are taking place are able to be followed (not saying anything untoward would go on but...). So I would also be forwarding those incoming mails to a moderated mailbox that the organisation owns along with an automatic reply stating that mail to the address is being automatically forwarded to an external address and if your mail is regarding blah blah...
