TSOHost no longer supporting sch.uk domain

Any recomendation on new Registar and DNS host?

Although we use PrimarySite to host our website we still use Nominet as domain registrar and Couldflare as DNS host

We use Krystal (https://krystal.io) as our registrar for domains.

 

I recommend them. The transfer process for a .sch.uk domain will be manual (open a ticket) but fairly painless.

We have also just moved to Krystal from TSO Host. Highly recommended only because the process went smoothly. Just make sure that you copy over your DNS records from TSO Host before you click on Unlock, otherwise you may lose them.

Not received an email yet! However our websites are hosted with krystal so won't be an issue moving.

I've started the process also moving to Krystal - their online chat facility was very useful without the need to register first!

 

- Registered and configured 2FA via the MS Authenticator

- Opened a ticket and sent them a list of .sch.uk domains to add

- All that's left is to change the domain TAG to KRYSTAL out of term time (end of March for me)

- Update my nameservers as they were before

- Once the TAG is changed, the renewal will be set to a long date in the future by Krystal support

- Bye TSOHost, it was great whilst it lasted - no complaints over the years!

I am debating Cloudflare or other hosting (Krystal seems highly recomended!) whats Krystal's costs like (just to host DNS for a sch.uk domain name).

hi all, can i just ask if you had to pay Krystal for hosting sch.uk domains? my understanding was that they were free - they were with TSOHost - but Krystal are quoting me £7.99 per year!

No charge for us however maybe they've started charging due to the number of people joining them.

thanks. i've just spoken to them and they seem to think there's an error in the email they sent me. he said that their system may have seen the domain as a .uk domain and added the standard annual charge rather than recognising sch.uk! thankfully, no charges are due!

It should be free for .sch.uk domains, but because school.region.sch.uk is weird (compared to collegename.ac.uk, for example) automated systems don't always get it right.

Has anyone transfered a sch.uk domain name to cloudflare? They appear to be able to make it work, but it doesnt look like they support the domain transfer (or maybe I have to pay the busness cost).

When I asked Nominet on the process to move I had the below response but surely nobody is doing this as it is very excessive.

 

To do this we will need to obtain a signed letter request from the school, on letter headed paper for the respective school, requesting the lock(s) to be removed and the reason for the removal i.e tag change.

 

We'll also need enhanced ID from the headteacher to ensure we are acting on the right authority. This constitutes a close up copy of some form of government ID, like a driver's license or passport, for example. Along with this close up, we will also need a photograph (selfie) of them holding their ID up to their face so we can complete a likeness check.

Will I need to do this for the move to Krystal too or is the process a little easier?

No, you can change the TAG through the TSO portal. Nominet only need to be involved if you can’t change it.
