MDM for iPads

Ah. Well I'm using free Mosyle as it's ..... free.... but I've been told by people who have used both that Meraki is better.

 

It doesn't surprise me, mosyle is a bit clunky and poorly laid out.

 

Also use Mosyle free.. it does the job for my situation, managing a small number (20) of shared iPads.. The paid version has waayy more functionality, however I agree with you on the layout/clunkyness

Intune - we manage all our Android phones via Intune and will be moving our iPads from Meraki to Intune over the Summer break

 

Don't suppose you would mind sharing your setup/config policies for your Android phones in Intune at all? Something we've been meaning to look at for a little while now.

We're getting A3 in September however I assume the incoming Intune licences are all per user whereas we only have 30-40 shared ipads that currently just speak to Meraki on a per device basis. That's not going to change so Intune from that perspective probably won't work for us, unless there's another way?

 

Meraki seems to be approx £22 per device a year, so approx £700-£800 to manage them. Is that really that bad? £1.80 a month?

£22.00 per device, are you joking?

 

Jamf School is £5.00 per device, per year. No restrictions or limitations, no paying on top for extra features (unlike Intune or Mosyle)

When I looked it said JAMF was per device, per month? I'll look into them then.

We are going to go with Intune, we have the A3 licensing and it is already included so makes sense. The only problem is 90% of our shared iPads are not compatible as they are that old due to departments buying them for themselves and not making any plans to refresh them after 4 or 5 years so it is a full reset over the Summer with departments being told that their iPads need to be disposed of or will become standalones. Any new ones will come through me entirely.

TBH any ipads that are old enough to not be getting IOS updates any more are not going to be manageable by any of the MDMs.

 

Sadly ipads that are 5+ years old just need to be WEE recycled or preferably donated. They still work great as standalones for individual people at home for example.

Completely agree. What used to be the policy here was that departments could submit a bid for iPads which would then mean they belong to their department. When I told them they had to be managed and although were sold as standalones this was not appropriate for a school environment they thought I was joking. Just a complete lack of understanding which has now left us with 90% of our iPads being no longer fit for purpose. I think our oldest is 12 years old! of course Meraki supports it just about but hardly any apps install. Of course it is hard to provide a strategy for devices that don't come through me.

We've migrated away from Meraki free, Apple Configurator & Mosyle free recently.

 

One school uses Intune for IOS and my other 2 uses Google MDM alongside our android fleet, it's only very basic restrictions/customisations/app installs for IOS as they are all staff devices.

 

There are discussions around moving all our devices to Intune from Google, but nobody quite has the stomach for it. It's hundreds and hundreds of android devices between the class sets, special devices, kiosks, and wider school community devices!

For IOS I find intune easier to use, no limitations found in our use case. I can't speak for shared devices as we don't use our like that - they're either single use staff, or single user kiosk.
