Are ESS trying to make it harder to migrate away from to SIMS?

Today our local LA refused to migrate our on premises Sims that was running on Windows 10 to a new VM on our server 2022, we have tried to get ParentPay/ESS involved in this migration but initially all very Roy Keane about it, then after a couple of weeks complete silence. But I will hammer away at it until we are told forget about the Sims roadmap and ignore everything on it and just get on the cloud.

Its highly unlikely ESS will let you do anything other than Migrate to SIMS connected and probably sign another 3 year contract.

Thanks for making my day even worse LOL, seriously now looking at purchasing Microsoft extended support for windows 10 at least I can kick it down the road for 3 years at a probable cost of £7.

Why won't your LA help migrate SIMS to a new server? That is a bizarre attitude for them to take. You could do it yourself......all of the information you need is here - https://customer.support-ess.com/csm?sys_kb_id=70c50d33fb019e545a34ff40aeefdc89&id=kb_article_view&sysparm_rank=1&sysparm_tsqueryId=2e54f471c3bd1250718b991c050131c6

ESS are bullying LEAS to make them unable to provide any such support especially database migration. It's part of their new offering SIMSAntiCompetitive

Yeh we just ignored it and migrated away. I mean its not hard to make a backup of a SQL database.

Luckily there are more automated ways to migrate now I think. So shouldn't be an issue either way.

The last 2 primaries to join our trust had this backup database issue, our 2 finance officers were not happy, fuming to put it mildly. They are now looking at Parent Pay alternatives since they own ESS.

Why are they not standing up for what is right? Why are the director of this company a disgrace to business?

Because there is, unfortunately, a difference between what is right and what is legal.

How can stopping someone from changing to another product be legal? I hate that we have a difference form what is morally right an what is legal.

For lots of reasons that are too "political" to be allowed to discuss here. Would love to have a rant, but best not!

Because, and I never thought I'd play devil's advocate for ESS, they technically aren't stopping people from changing to another product - they're just restricting the ways in which it can be done to make it very, very difficult for people to switch which, in my view, is an attempt to try and deter them from doing so.

Because local SIMS support units are being told if they help people migrate by providing .bak files etc. they will have their contract to support SIMS cancelled plus threat of court etc.

I fear LEAs are being bullied in to the same position as schools. Not so much can't or won't help - more daren't help.

Why dont the LA tell them what there doing is any competitive and they will still offer support as what their doing is morally wrong?

Politics. Morally wrong doesn't mean legally wrong unfortunately, and Capita/ESS still have fingers through pies like Cassandra Nova... and possibly share the same moral values.

As much as we think schools should be treated more leniently, they are not as important to the powers that be as nonsense like The Church and make believe railways.

If you feel strongly that the CMA made a misjudgment about this, and didn't consider that ESS were actually locking out hardware and software support from third parties, along with adding difficulty to migrations, then it's best to contact your MP to raise it with them.

It annoys me that the management team will not come on to here and explain why they think it is reasonable to stop a process that has been used for years? Why they there not prepped to put skin in the game. Original SIMs was a tool created by someone to solve a problem it seems the current management team has gone away from this Idea.

Their position will not move from "They are infringing on our IP" or a variant of that. The reality is obviously different ("give me all of your money") but that doesn't sound quite as legal.
