Ubquiti wireless slow after a power cut at xmas

We had a power cut at xmas and since then we have had slow speed when under pressure.

We have 1 to 1 computing so 1000 devices connected at once. We regularly get 30 devices plus on a single AP. Before xmas it was ok, not great but worked, if an AP was over subscribed it just slowed down. I'm currently experiencing slow speeds everywhere when under pressure. Not sure why. I've got no syslogs of concern on switches and the unifi controller looks ok.

We are part of a new build so I'm keeping what we have going. I have 67 UAP-AC-Pro APs of differing ages. I'm using HP Edge switches and a older HPE 5800-24g core switch. New build is done in September so I've got 6 more months of trying to keep it working.

 

I updated APs to 6.6.55.15189. I'm on an older version of the controller as I'm afraid to move it. I'm under the impression the controller sw version doesn't really change much.

 

Something i've noticed when speeds are slow the web ui on the core switch is very slow. As its an older switch i'm struggling to assess the port utilization.

 

Any pointers or things to try or look at are very welcome

Can you check logs on the switch and check CPU usage on the switch historically?

 

I assume your core is doing intervlan routing between the different subnets?

 

Instead of using the GUI of the switch when things are happening can you connect a console cable direct to the switch and see what is going on in the logs.

Yeh that web interface slowing down does point at the core switch having issues - can you view logs of CPU/memory usage on the core to see if it's getting saturated?

 

My old core switch that we've gotten rid of looks like it had over 3x the switching capacity of your core so that could be an issue now you've expanded the school and wifi massively.

 

Though all of the above doesn't really explain why it's gone slow since a power cut! Have you tried rebooting the core since then?

I've not got much going on in the logs out of the ordinary. My Smoothwall which is using a trunk seems to causing a mac duplicate issue which I've got Smoothwall looking into. It shouldn't be causing me other issues. Smoothwall is running ok. When the system is behaving itself i can download at a full 1gb up or down. The core switch cpu and memory never really goes over 30% even back through historical stats.

I'm using about 15 vlans with different subnets.

 

Its like I've got interference. I've been trying to get my old Cacti setup working but its just giving me errors. Can you suggest an alternative that can monitor port utilization? My older core switch can't do it on GUI, my edge switches can which again don't show over utilization.

I don't get the same issue on wired it is just wireless which to me means its a wireless AP issue. I will need to test this a bit

I need to reboot the core and plan to do so in the holidays. Its that thing in schools where they complain about things but then don't want any outages. I'm worried about rebooting it lol

I wouldn't wait until holidays, I'd do it on a Friday evening about 5pm and give myself the whole weekend to fix it if it goes to hell...

I think a reboot is generally classed as worse than a change

Just make sure you save the configs on them before you reboot. Dollars to doughnuts, someone has changed something on at least one of them and forgotten to save it.

We rolled back from 6.6.55 due to extremely poor speeds. No issue on older firmware
