Games hosting on Scratch

Scratch is a great site but is being abused to host games that the kids are not in the least bit interested in being educated by.

 

Is it just a whack-a-mole job or should I block it and unblock when there is a lesson that requires it?

Would the offline version of Scratch, while permanently blocking the online version, help you?

We blocked it for persistent offenders, who have to use the offline version. Of course the best solution would be classroom management.

I guess its whatever you feel will be best for your situation. Either way will be time consuming, either checking web history reports, or quickly unblocking it when teachers inevitably forget to tell you they needed it for that lesson.

In our situation, we have left it unblocked, but if i happen to see one come up when searching for other things i will block it, rather than going out to specifically hunt down the URL's.

We have blocked scratch studio and scratch projects because of persitant game playing. Pupils can still use online scratch for their own coding.

We have Netsweeper and Impero.

 

In Netsweeper, scratch.mit.edu is decrypted.

 

In Netsweeper it is:

 

scratch.mit.edu/studio

scratch.mit.edu/projects are both blocked.

 

scratch.mit.edu/projects/editor/ Allowed

 

The allow in Netweeper overrides the block.

 

Generally I think this would equate to:

 

*.scratch.mit.edu/studio.*

*.scratch.mit.edu/projects.* are both blocked.

 

*.scratch.mit.edu/projects/editor/* Allowed

 

Pupils don't need accounts for this and can download/upload their work.
