EDU version of Windows does not have the right to install in folders?

Exchange between us and support for Shapr3D - could this be right??

Please advise if it's possible to download an MSI or EXE for installation at our school as we don't have access to the Microsoft App Store.

I've been able to download a large file - it's still not an MSI or EXE, its this file: Shapr3D.Package_5.490.5951.0_x64_ARM64.msixbundle

I get this error when I try and run this file.

App Installer failed to install package dependencies. Ask the developer for package.

Thanks for the info, this is what I was looking for.

The installation stops because the EDU version of Windows does not have the right to install in folders where Shapr3D should be installed. Do you have a different device that is running a regular version of Windows?

Ugly hack, but have your tried de-restricting the app store on those machines to get it installed, then restrict it again? Our work flow here is that during imaging or monthly checks we move computers to have a less restrictive policy to ensure software and updates install promptly before re-applying our standard more restrictive set. Seems to work well enough for everything we care about.

The Education version of Windows is just a slightly modified Enterprise version. I suspect that you have removed the Windows Store from your image using one of those tools that removes bloatware/unnecessary apps, which would explain why you can't install an AppX package. If you have removed the Windows Store, I'd advise leaving it in and then restricting access to it via AppLocker, then you can still deploy Store apps via SCCM, etc. Some AppX packages also require other AppX packages as dependancies, so they'd need installing first, but you'd have to get clarification of that from the developer. Can you install any other widows store apps successfully? If you can, palm it back to the developer.

We're getting some success installing the software, but a fair few Windows 10 devices are throwing this up:

In a room of 20, just over half have given this error, yet the other installed fine :/

Just double checked our Task Sequence and there are no custom tasks to remove the store :/

 

I'll do some testing on group policies.

 

Just odd that it installs fine on some devices.

 

Will also re-image a device it fails on, but guess it'll be fine after that :/

Agree this is a brush off. Find a failing machine and change the license to enterprise to remove it from the conversation as an issue.

Have not been able to get anywhere with my investigations as to why it works on some computers running Windows 10 but not others.

 

It seems to reliably install on Windows 11 so we're just going to upgrade all 48 computers in DT to Win11 at the end of the month.
