Whats the good setup for a school hall for projectors

 

good makes ect

 

would you recommend a short or long lens ect

Depends...

 

Are you front or rear projecting? UST above the screen? Projecting from the back of the hall 30m away or suspended from a lighting bar 5m away.

 

If you're doing something simple from a short distance then I usually just go NEC, anything more complicated and you are in Christie/Barco with specialist lenses territory.

 

It is sometimes cheaper to consider a small LED video wall or a large 108" panel than a Barco depending on things like needing protection from balls!

We have this projecting on to an electric screen which drops down at the front of the stage in the hall:

Then two side projectors that project on to the wall either side of the stage:

Basically the closer you go to the screen the less light loss you have the less lumens you need and more consumer grade your projector can be.

 

If hanging from a lighting bar is an option then do that...

 

I've got a couple of these on lighting bars about 4m from the screen and they are perfectly daylight visible...

Got 2 large epson's here in Hall and Gym - good image and very reliable.

Whatever one you go for make it is a Laser one, we went from an 8500 lumen dual lamp one to a 7000 lumen laser projector (an Epson) and it is so much better, I'd estimate twice as bright.

Check what else the hall is used for

 

A lot of halls get used for basketball in bad weather

 

Never yet met a group of kids that didn;t regard a low hanging projector as a target!

 

so you might need to consider a cage

 

either for the projector or the kids - either would work

Good call on the projector cage. We have one in one of our halls for that exact reason and it's served us well.

+1 for Epson lasers and another +1 for a cage.

We're pretty much an Epson laser house exclusively here - bear in mind that although there's no lamps to change basic maintenance such as filter cleaning is necessary, so put your projector somewhere you can still get to it!

 

If you're going over 15,000 lumens be wary of laser risk groups - this is approaching risk group 3 territory where you have to consider eye damage (maybe not for your application, but just mentioning it for general knowledge)

 

The further your throw the less likely you will have any distortion on your image, we usually do front projection with projector at the back of the room. This has it's own challenges including getting the signals to the projector (we use a single Extron DTP system and then have an AV switcher at the front to manage different devices such as laptops, PC, doc cam, blu-ray etc), and we control the projector via RS232 panels rather than remotes.
