Who allows staff to create their own Teams?

I was wondering who let's their staff create Teams vs who doesn't.

 

We've recent had an issue where a public team was made as opposed to private. I've seen you can potentially lock this down now so no public teams are allowed but just wondered the spilt.

In our rush to get Teams functional pre-pandemic we gave the staff a lot of leeway to create the Teams they needed. I regret this now and should have looked at School Data Sync and Salamander.

It would be a lot of work and teacher gnashing of teeth to change it now but it is something I am planning (hoping!) to do.

That way lies madness and a very messy SharePoint setup (not to mention many duplicates!)

Yes. If they want an ad-hock team for a club or trip, it's way easier to let teachers do it themselves. We do have naming polices all staff need to follow though.

Although we'd still need the naming polices even if we didn't allow teams creation as I think they could still rename their pre-genned teams.

NO..! we have 2 secondaries and 7 primaries.... and the penchant for Staff not following naming guidelines leads to chaos.

 

Here only IT create Teams, then we can control the type and naming of the Team as all our schools are under the same MS tenant.

When I worked at a Microsoft school I found the School Data Sync caused problems with courses which where not one year long such as KS4, KS5 and Carousel subjects, I never found a solution for this before leaving. I now work for a large MAT and the central Google Team manage this and I very happily don't get involved.

Nope. It was open, to all, before I came and the amount of silliness and duplication was ridiculous, and it wasn't the pupils.

 

Now we have a service request in our help desk that asks all the right questions. When I get five minutes (HA HA HA HA HA HA:rofl:) I'm going to integrate it with a workflow that will ask approval and then create the team if agreed by the IT Team.

In a highly regulated environment, I setup a solution so that users can create their own teams, the desire being not to put a form in front of productivity but have a degreee of control.

 

To mitigate against the obvious sprawl, firstly there's a power flow that is triggered on the creation of the team that asks the creator some questions about the team that's stored in a SharePoint list, and triggers regular review with escalation to a risk manager if no response.

Thanks everyone for your comments. It looks like you can only turn off creating public teams with the use of an E5 licence so that is that out of the window. We may have to go down the route of blocking all staff from creating Teams.

Not any more. We're using Locker to create and manage class Teams, and anything outside of that needs to be requested via helpdesk to try and prevent duplication and keep control of naming conventions.

We get Staff to do Teams creation and deletion. We have 1:1 iPad deployment and use Teams extremely heavily with all subjects and lessons so our staff are very good at house keeping with them because of this. Makes me happy as its 1 less thing I need to manage.

Is this a recent change? I'm almost certain we don't have E5 and we are stopping creation.

This is just to do with stopping creation of public Teams and not private Teams. You can fairly easily turn of Team creation for all without a special licence as far as I'm aware.

This would help with the issue we've had yes. But if it was down to me I'd block staff from creating any team.
