chazzy2501 Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 Entra Cloud Sync or Entra Connect Sync... I just want the service to continue as it did before but it recommends I use Entra Cloud Sync (as I choose none of the options) but the Entra Connect Sync sounds more like the old AD Connect.. user and password sync from the local domain...
mrbios Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 (edited) Go here: https://aka.ms/M365Wizard And look at the cloud sync tool, it'll ask you about your setup, tick what applies to you and down the bottom it tells you which it recommends. Personally sticking with Connect rather than Cloud sync. EDIT: Worth noting that if you're already up to date on a newer version of 2.0 then it's just a rename of Azure AD connect and there's nothing to do until they next release an update. Only v1 is retired from October. (assuming i've read it right..) Edited September 22, 2023 by mrbios
howartp Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 Have you a link to the info about it being switched off? I've not seen anything?
mrbios Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 Have you a link to the info about it being switched off? I've not seen anything? See my edit above, if im right it's just that AD Connect has been renamed. Retiring is just V1.0 which has been known about for a while (V1.0 last update was 2021, so people should have really moved up to 2.0 by now anyway)
chazzy2501 Posted September 22, 2023 Author Posted September 22, 2023 aaaand what version am I on.. version 1.6... welp. it just always worked!
ITGuyNW Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 We're on 2.2.1.0, phew. Don't scare me like that haha 1

chazzy2501 Posted September 22, 2023 Author Posted September 22, 2023 ....I can't install it, only supports server 2016.. Dang this server may have been overlooked somewhat.
jthompson Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 See this other thread for more details regarding retirement of v1. https://www.edugeek.net/forums/cloud-services/227921-upgrade-azure-ad-connect-before-september-2022-a.html Have to admit that seeing that advisory in the AAD/Entra overview page hasgiven me a start more than a few times, before I remember that it's just about v1.
pete Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 ....I can't install it, only supports server 2016.. Dang this server may have been overlooked somewhat. It's pretty trivial to migrate the config to a supported OS. Below is a decent guide: https://www.azure365pro.com/migrate-azure-ad-connect-to-a-new-server/
Cw2k Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 If you have to sync device objects such as for hybrid join and windows hello then these are not supported with cloud sync yet
Olliedawg Posted September 22, 2023 Posted September 22, 2023 Only Version 1.x You can move to V2.x and be fine. Earlier this year I spun up a fresh Server 2016 VM purely for azure AD connect when most of our VM's were on Server 2012. Like others have said, migrating the config is easier than you would expect.
mikes Posted September 26, 2023 Posted September 26, 2023 Yeah I was running version 1 on Server 2012 and it would not let me upgrade. Spun up a new Server 2019, fresh install of AD Connect, imported the config, put the 2012 mode into "Test" mode (there is a mode you can set it to where it makes no changes) while I verified the new version worked. I had some problems with it not syncing domain admin accounts due to the account it creates not having the correct permissions but that doesn't seem to be a problem. Any problems you can just shut down the new version and go back to the old one - for 1 week anyway!
