Is there anyway to both own a car. The DVLA don’t seem to make it easy. I wish my wife and I could both own the car as we both pay for it. We both own the house together but not the car.

Car ownership is legally tied to a single person. You can’t both own it with the DVLA.

Your V5C does not register ownership, only the keeper. The main user of the vehicle, if you like. That can only be one person.

 

Ownership would be indicated by a bill of sale or receipt, which could have both of you on it.

You could transfer the car into a limited company and own 50% shares each. I do not actually recommend making it this complicated though 😄

Something to be aware of as can effect insurance cover too. I can't drive other cars on third party cover because I'm not the keeper or owner on my lease vehicle but I have fully comp, 2 insurers have told me that so prob some truth. I only regularly have use of one car anyway apart from work vehicles which I'm covered for. Mind you been my age getting named driver on another policy is pretty easy and normally jus £10 if that. Why can you both own a house but not a car? So I pay for part of the car but can't be a part owner. It just frustrating that I am the owner of the naff car as she struggles to drive it and I was working full at home. So now I help pay for it but have no legal stake in it.

I think you would find you do have a legal stake in it now you are paying. What makes you think you do not?

You can be, just not a part-keeper.

Important distinction. Forget the V5C in this case.

That was my point. Being the registered keeper does not mean that you are necessarily the owner.
