Expanding Harddrive on VM

Hi,

 

Not fully familar with vm esxi (i've only really done hard drive creations and upgrading ram and adding extra cores)

 

One of our drives on our sims server is starting to fill up, will probably need expanding.

 

On the list of drives for that VM, its the 2nd one in the list. Would it be fine just to turn the server off, increase the size then fire it back up? It's just a data drive, doesn't contain the OS etc.

 

Or will i need to do it some other way?

This is super easy to do, you do not even have to power off the VM! (although I am sure someone will say there is a benefit to turning it off?)

 

Just go into ESXi, expand the disk. Login to VM, go to Disk Management - then extend.

It will take you all of 45 seconds.

I tried that with our cctv server (just out of curiosity) , it had a red exclamation mark next to it and wouldn't let me save

Do you have enough capacity on the physical disks (array) that your VM disk is on? If not you might need to move the disk or whole VM storage-base, which may mean shutting the VM down depending on your license.

 

Will is certainly right in principle, I do it (far too) regularly.

Hyper-V or VMWare?

 

I've done loads of servers in ESXi, all windows servers were very straight forward. Expand the disk in ESXi then go into disk manager on the VM, rescan disks and extend.

I did the first bit, just didn't do the rescan part which i will do tomorrow
