Cost per data point

We’re looking to get 20 additional data points installed over the summer for our WiFi. I’ve been told by our usual contractor it’ll take three weeks and cost £17,000. Some are in difficult to reach areas

 

Am I out of touch or is this excessive?

Even without knowing the site that seems excessive for 20 data points! What is the spec being put forward? If you would appreciate a second pair of eyes on it I can see if someone from our install team could look over the requirements and put a cost forward - or at least advise whether that is reflective of the work involved - given some are in difficult areas.

They don't want the job and have just provided a silly price - unless the work requires cherry pickers, scaffolding and "gold" coated cables.

That does sound expensive. We just did an install of 35 cat6a points across two Victorian builds for a fair few thou less than that. Took a team of 5 about 4 days or so, going through a mix of strange lofts, suspended ceilings and lofts within lofts (very strange place!)

 

Are they going back to the same cabs or multiple cabs? obviously the more you can pull at once the faster it becomes.

 

If additional containment is required, e.g. trunking / cable tray then that can increase costs quickly. installers can't just leave it resting on ceiling tiles unsupported in case of fire.

They do seem to work very slow though, took 3 days last week to run two double sockets

New builds generally are quite easy, as cable tray should already be in, and just needs firestopping when it goes through walls.

 

Asbestos could be an issue in 70s builds which might slow things a bit, its usually quite easy to route around.

 

I can't think of any cabling project I've worked on where it would take two days to run 4 cables, without seeing the run I won't judge!

A few years ago I used to work on the basis of £100 a point on a straight forward run, maybe now £150/160 nothing too complex. If there are already existing wiring near by it should be easy enough, unless extra kit i.e. working at height kit required that price seems stupid. Have you had a second and third quote?

We're having a bunch of new CAT6A points put in across our Trust for the wifi this summer, as part of Connect the Classroom. The company doing it is charging about £134 per point. So, £17k for 20 points is preposterously overpriced. The only time I've seen such over the top pricing was with BSF/PFI schools tied into contracts with their building owners, who add in service charges over their useful life etc...
