Smoothwall is up for renewal (June, yes I know I've left it late) - no issue with smoothwall at all but would be wrong of me not to look at other solutions and pricing etc.

Quoted for an S9 appliance and 1500 users.......

  • We have some off prem student devices which will need filtering/monitoring
  • Needs to be easy enough to use
  • Ability to automatically send out safeguarding alerts both instant and as a daily email for nominated email addresses.
  • We use the Firewall for Wifi VLAN segregation.
  • Nice way for users of BYOD to install their own SSL Cert
  • Block VPN!!!
  • Safeguarding Reports
  • Some kind of Support - similar to Smoothwalls (they have been fine when I have contacted them - so no comments :D )

I saw a quick demo of Fortigate and Analyser and linked how it worked

Saw Lightspeed years ago and wasnt impressed - may have changed since.....

Not seen anything else as yet.......

@Wave9_Lee, what would you recommend and could I get a demo?

  • Thanks 1

Hi @mdrabble

we're a certified Fortinet partner so can happily quote you for your requirements.

Also launched at BETT is our new incident management platform which works in conjunction with FortiGate devices (so no specific need for FortiAnalyzer for reporting and incident management purposes).

We'd be more than happy to give you a demo too just send me a PM and I'll get one of out technical consultants to give you a buzz. See https://www.schoolsbroadband.co.uk/e-safety-filtering-security/incident-management/

Thanks

Dave

Securly - Web Filter for Schools is well worth a look at. Completely cloud based so no on-site appliances. Works via PAC file on managed devices or DNS for anything else on the network. Simple process to install the SSL certificate for BYOD devices and separated DNS for guest network that doesn't require SSL certificate. User authentication via Office365 or Google.

I'd second Securly, Its a bit different to Smoothwall as it doesnt log as much detail, but we also use Senso and the two of them together allow full management of devices on and off site,

Not been at my current site very long, inherited a WatchGuard firewall that I've never used and know nothing about but turns out the school got it years ago from Epic Net and I have been very happy with the way they've supported me and the appliance (training, health check etc.)

Been dealing with Chris Picknell who has worked there years and really knows this stuff inside out, explains things in an easy to understand way.

I would say it’s worth checking how well it integrates with MS sentinel or other SEIM solutions. I find the big picture amazing when it been setup for the environment.

Out of interest, what gaps in Securly functionality does Senso plug for you?
