Time set for UK Emergency Alerts test

I still haven't had mine. I'm telling myself it's because I'm cool and have a system-wide ad-blocker running* rather than me being not worth saving from a dinosaur attack.

My EE phone got it bang on time, my partner's Three phone never got it.

I didn't get it, but I assumed that was because I don't use data/WiFi on my phone. Now I don't know if it was because I'm on Smarty...

I did get it (Lyca Mobile) at 14.59 and I thought it seemed very American, almost like what you hear in the movies. Both the alert tone and also the female American voice over (which may just be a basic non-localised Android/Google Pixel default setting) just came across like I was watching The Day After Tomorrow or something.

I've had messages drop in on my phone whilst in the US, but it depends on where you are as to whether they use it or not.

The messages I received mainly consisted of lost kids, although the hail storm alerts in Denver were very handy (and boy did it ever come down!).

I got it at 3:05 on my Xiaomi 12 but my partner didn't get anything on hers until we were outside her house at 8pm and the notification popped up but was timestamped as if it came in at 3:21. No noise or anything, just the text on the screen as a normal iPhone notification. We're both on Voxi (Vodafone)

What I noticed was the message disappeared as soon as I tapped it to shut it up. So if you haven’t read it properly you may never know what the emergency was.

You should be able to go to the emergency alert settings on your phone and see your full alert history (the same place you go to disable the alerts).

I'd read the alert only goes out on 4/5G, I have an old iPhone 5s and it only does 3G.

I also hated the horrible synth pseudo American voice. Couldn't they get the speaking clock lady to do it instead?

Saw someone on our local area FB page going on about how she's scared about when the alert will go off and what it will mean and is really worried.

 

Does make me wonder are people like this when they get a normal text message? From what i've read and heard it's common place in lots of other countries.

Which makes sense to me now as my Mum didn't get it and her phone is only 3G compatible also. My Nokia 6.1 got it despite repeated text messages from Vodafone suggesting that my phone doesn't support 4G (it does) and my work phone got it as it's a 5G phone.

Just to clarify, I think my iPhone 5s can do 4G but I've never bothered switching over to it in the settings. I honestly use my mobile data so little and nobody ever calls me (apart from scammers and even that's very rare) so...

Considering they had the same properly during previous testing (not nationwide), I’m not confident it’s been addressed.

Considering networks are turning off 3G (Vodafone for example) it seems a little waste of resources to set it up on anything below 4G.

Yes, but GSM isn't planned to be switched off for at least the next 10 years so why can't they send alerts via that for those who have 3G phones?

 

EDIT: Should clarify that I'm referring to the UK rather than Australia which has already phased out GSM.

Some UK networks are switching off as soon as December this year

Shame as they added value, evidence including links as to why this isn’t being rolled out to 3G.
