Veeam Backup Appliance - AKA a Server with Tape Drive & Internal Storage

Hi all,

 

We use veeam here and are very happy with it. It's been flawless for us but our hardware is now of age and needs changing.

 

Our backup hardware is as follows;

 

1)Dell server (10 years old) running veeam

2)External Tape drive & tapes (10 years old connected the above server via mini sas)

3)External SAN (10 years old connected to above server via mini sas)

4)NAS (Qnap) in a different building that has copy jobs from the SAN.

 

I'd like to consolidate 1-3 into one device, like some sort of veeam back-up appliance. anybody do this? what servers are you using? Can you get internal tape drives on servers now

Most of the veeam servers I maintain are vms which are heavily locked down / isolated.

 

We use a nas as storage and copy to the dc as well

No idea what it costs, but this sounds like a really cool solution that i've been curious about for a year or so now:

Utilises immutable virtual tapes, or something to that effect, negating the need for physical tapes. Would tick all your boxes though.

 

Make sure you add a cloud target to your backup routine perhaps. Backblaze B2 is super cheap, and easy to setup, we pay <£60pm for about 25TB if i rememeber correctly.

We have a Starwinds device, not been invovled in it but its sat in the rack in the server room!

Yep we had one like that are my previous work.

 

Dell server with Veeam locally, local storage (split for VM replications/backups), and tape drive (We found it was cheaper with Dell to have an external drive compared to internal, but depends on the day with them)

I'd skip the tape drive and move to cloud backup storage, myself. That would tick the same box for offsite storage with minimal intervention, and fewer moving parts to go wrong.

 

1+3 should then be achievable with a beefy server with lots of storage.

We just have backup on a VM and use cloud storage these days, there is no need to run a powerful server for backup really.
