Brax Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 Hi Everyone, My wife's nine year old nephew has requested some Pokémon cards for Christmas. Specifically he has said "V star lost origin jumbo cards not pikachu". Can anyone help translate what he's after ? Thanks I think the latest sequence of packs are called "Lost Origin" which would have V star cards in. But him saying jumbo cards makes me think of something like this? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pok%C3%A9mon-VSTAR-Collection-Hisuian-Zoroark/dp/B0BCPKBNRC/ref=asc_df_B0BCPKBNRC/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=606933457097&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5127367509796449640&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1006661&hvtargid=pla-1749668630770&psc=1&th=1&psc=1 Jumbo cards usually only come in a pack like this I think so you can only get one or two per pack. The above would be safe bet though. 1
ITGuyNW Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 I'm just happy enough getting the jumbled lots for a fiver off ebay ha 1
MYK-IT Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 No idea if these are what you're after, but just been posted on HUKD. Pokemon TCG: Tin £9.50 -Free collection @ Argos https://www.hotukdeals.com/share-deal-from-app/4049073 1
RLR Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 (edited) Jumbo cards are usually within promotional boxes and within these boxes you would usually get a few packs of pokemon cards too. Lost Origins is one expansions to the card game (the packs will say what expansion they are). V-Star is a type of rare card you can find in the packs. My kids got into this a few months ago so I'm still learning but I found you can buy some of the shiny v-star/v-max cards from ebay for a couple of quid. There's also a lot of fake pokemon cards that people create on Amazon/ebay. Kids do like these but are not genuine. If you only want genuine things you need to make sure the Brand is Pokémon. The above would be safe bet though. Having just had a browse of the online store I use to buy Magic The Gathering cards (who also sell pokemon) it seems that this is the case - all the Jumbo cards have seem to only be available as 'singles' - i.e. you have to buy them individually, there's no pack or box of them (and are up to around £2 each FWIW). However I will freely admit my knowledge of Pokemon, especially the cards, is extremely limited so I wouldn't place too much reliability on it! Another possible option would be to see if there are any local gaming stores in the area, as they are often happy to offer assistance/advice in translating 'gamer code' into understandable English - my local one certainly seems to be. 1
dcwhitworth Posted December 13, 2022 Author Posted December 13, 2022 (edited) Thanks everyone for your advice. I know from childhood experience that there's huge delight if someone buys you something from one of your geek areas of interest but also significant disappointment if they don't get it right, and that's a risk I'd like to try and minimise. But it feels a nicer option than just giving them money or taking them to the shop to choose for themselves. Sadly my favoured local games shop where I could hope to find expertise doesn't stock them. Said it's the only time he's ever had a break in is when he stocked Pokémon cards and that's all they stole. Edited December 13, 2022 by dcwhitworth
ICTDirect_Dave Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Pokemon cards tend to be far more readily available than Magic the Gathering are. My local Spar even sells them in a dispenser next to the scratch cards! But it's pretty hard to find a shop that knows anything about them beyond "All kids want them". Your friendly local game store will be the best bet for sound advice. Otherwise somewhere like Game will have a decent range and will do their bets to help.

Said it's the only time he's ever had a break in is when he stocked Pokémon cards and that's all they stole. Mine had the same with MTG cards - the CCTV recorded them breaking in via an access door upstairs, heading straight down to the cash register, ignoring the cash register and grabbing all the MTG sealed product from behind the counter, and then running off.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Slightly OT, but there's a LOT of value in collectible card games! I've sold a few cards from my Magic collection on ebay, with a couple of them fetching over £150!! For a bit of card!!

I got into it with the original unlimited edition set, looking at prices these days I wish I'd held onto them !
ICTDirect_Dave Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 I got into it with the original unlimited edition set, looking at prices these days I wish I'd held onto them ! Goodness! I have a couple of Unlimited cards in my collection, but I started in earnest with 4th edition and picked up a load of Revised cards on the cheap. Those first three runs are worth silly money!

Just been looking up prices, oh my. I used to have two black lotuses amongst others. I still have a pile of common cards and some go for $20-40. Going to root in the loft tomorrow. Stomped round the city at lunchtime having no luck getting Pokémon cards, last shop I tried were the only ones to have a good select of cards and some boxed sets. I approached the counter asking for advice and a nice young lady said "I collect Pokémon !". Great advice given and a boxed set acquired. It appears some boxed sets headline a particular creature and have V star cards, plus a jumbo card and some Lost Origin packs and the featured creature wasn't Pikachu. I think this has ticked all the boxes. 1
ICTDirect_Dave Posted December 15, 2022 Posted December 15, 2022 Just been looking up prices, oh my. I used to have two black lotuses amongst others. Oh crikey! That's a retirement fund right there if you still had them! I still have a pile of common cards and some go for $20-40. Going to root in the loft tomorrow. Get rooting! You never know what you'll have hidden away! And if you want to pass them on to someone who regularly plays and will cherish them, then I'm right over here ;-)

If not interested in selling/passing your cards onto someone who does still play, I can thoroughly recommend MTG Magic Singles, Sealed Products, Accessories - Arcane Cards for a place to sell. I packed up and sold a lot of my unused commander decks over the summer (about £450 worth) and they were really easy to sell to - just made an excel list of all the cards, sent it off to them for a quote which was then valid for a month or so.

I'd be really interested to see what prices they're offering for cards. Any chance you still have a quote?

I didn't actually get the individual prices - I was only interested in the 'job lot'. I still have my inventory list that I sent him if you're interested in that? Alternatively, his website did say he was happy to email out his spreadsheet containing all his prices?
dcwhitworth Posted December 27, 2022 Author Posted December 27, 2022 Well according to feedback the nephew was 'hyperventilating' over the cards he got, so I guess we managed to hit the nail on the head. Thanks everyone for your help ! 3
