I need to convince the missus to let me buy a 4k dalek in the new house....

They can make a good base for interesting robotics projects. I did my master degree research project in the University of Reading's cybernetics lab, which had a Dalek to hand - this was a few (25?) years ago, I'm not sure if it was a reproduction or an original prop. If I remember correctly, the original design was intended for someone inside on a tricycle, hence the kind of angular shape and low centre of gravity. As props, they tend to be rather heavy, and from the pictures given in the link I don't know if the top can rotate on the base. Our Dalek was intended to act as a fire extinguisher - you might be able to convince your wife that it's a fire-prevention tool, then you even have a good excuse for it to be rushing around yelling "Exterminate! Exterminate!" the whole time.

Turns out the website has its own answer

How can I persuade my wife/partner to allow me to have a Dalek in the house? You can either tell them before you receive the Dalek or surprise them when it arrives. If you tell them before, explain that it is an investment. No-one else has made them before, and that it's not often that you treat yourself to something that you've waited twenty or more years for.If you decide on the surprise approach it may be preferable to show them the various parts making up the Dalek 'one at a time' over a period of a few days. The instant shock of seeing the full item in all it's glory may be too much for them.

You need to reassure your OH that it won't impact her lifestyle anything like as much as she might be thinking. Daleks don't need to be walked every day, you don't have to pick up their poo and they're relatively happy to be left at home if she absolutely doesn't want you bringing it along with you on holidays, trips to the in-laws, days out, etc.

Advantages:

- You could go to shows and charge people to have a photo with a Dalek. Nice money maker.

- Your wife will be glad you have something to do / a dalek to talk to.

- You will have hours of fun with it so it will keep you off the streets.

- It is cheaper than owning kids or a dog

- You will be protected from any future alien invasion.

Dissadvantages:

- It doesnt pay your energy bills so check you can afford it.

- Someone might steal it.

- Your wife might think it is more important than her.

If your Dalek is to live inside you'd have to fit ramps to your front and back doors (if you want it to have access to your patio).

They can levitate now you know :)

Maybe you could both compromise? Saw this in someone's window in town. It's more space/partner/wallet friendly, but still not tiny.

That looks half Dalek, Half Minion.

Isn't that a "New Paradigm"* Dalek?

Though IIRC there was a minion off to the left. There was probably some yellow wool left over!

*AKA "Buy some more merchandise".
