NOTE: Kindly, all dog lovers, please move on to another thread.

My wife has made the decision that she wants to get a puppy.

I don't want one. In fact I could easily say I don't like dogs.

Please list me some reasons to NOT get a dog! I need something to come back to her with.

Thankyou.

How about being honest with her any saying that you do not want one?

Other than that they are very tying, you need to make sure that you don't leave them for too long, walk them three times a day (at least), ensure that you're home by certain times, can't take them with you to places, vets bills can be expensive, pray that they're not picky eaters as food can be expensive, they cover your home with hairs, demand to sleep in your bed, want to be out at odd ungodly hours of the night. I could go on.

p.s. I have a dog.

A significant tie. Hols more difficult, including trips to relatives that aren't "dog friendly".

It is unkind to leave one all day while at work*.

You don't want one.

*I had a "rescue" that was happy to be left as he'd been kennelled with Customs & Excise for his whole life.

I have been fighting my family against getting a dog for years. Our close relatives all have dogs and because of that I have been around dogs for a long time. I'm happy to play with a dog for a few hours but I don't want to own one.

Thanks all.

One of my children has recently been diagnosed with autism and she thinks this will make this magically better for him. I won't deny that dogs can make great company, are calming, a good responsability and encourage interaction with children..... HOWEVER.... We have three children (7 year old and 6 year old twins), life is demanding as it is with swimming, football practice at weekends, etc and I have said that as they grow up I want them to go on adventures and plan trips abroad. This will all be restricted with a dog.

She says this breed (Cokapoo) dont malt and are clean and playful, don't bark but someone tell me one dog that has never made a mess, or trashed a house in some way? Yeah right!

Yes this breed maybe don't malt so less messy but still hard work! Still needing a walk each day, will still be scratching at the door in the mornings, will still poop everywhere!

Not to forget that we have rabbits who will be petrified!

She wants to keep it in the back kitchen and conservatory but no dog I've ever met will not want to discover the entire house and will probably end up in someones bed!

Rant over. Just could do without this looming over.

I have a 11 month Sprockerpoo, (Cockerpoo with springer in) and have a 3 year old step daughter. Here's my takeaways

He's the most well natured dog i've had, wouldn't harm a fly, only wants to give love. Great with the 3 year old. Never had any worries with him around her (more of her around him when he was small!)

But he is a lot of work. 2 hours of walks a day to keep him calm, yes he doesnt malt but if you dont groom him he will matt to hell. He does bark (a lot), he does chew (every puppy does). If he gets wet he does smell!

Up to 5 months old he will poo and pee everywhere!

But i still love the hell out of him and wouldnt change him (bar the barking tbf that gets annoying sometimes)

My neighbour has a cockapoo - whoever told you they don't bark is lying. How will keeping the dog in the kitchen help your child? Surely an emotional support dog needs to be with the child to be a help?

Reasons not to have a dog from a dogs perspective:

Being left at home on my own

Not getting at least 1 preferably 2 good walks a day

Being told of for chewing things as im a puppy

Finding out my pet insurance doesn't cover something

I like to sleep on your bed

I was trying to tell you I wanted to go for a wee/poo

From a human perspective its a total commitment

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm hoping she is realising what it entails.

I think she's been going over for a few coffee morings with the neighbours and got puppy loved up. Falling for their cuteness and not seeing the bigger picture.

For the love of $deity, I'm a dog lover and would avoid poodle mixes like the plague! They need brushing every single day or they'll get matted, they often have poor temperament from being poorly bred dogs and they don't stay clean unless you take them to be groomed once every few weeks, even with daily brushing! You'd be better off with a small terrier sort, like a Jack Russel if anything. But honestly, if you don't want a dog you should sit down and explain that. It's not fair for you to be uncomfortable in your own home.

Hopefully I am not killed off and I will return here tomorrow. Or worse, she kills me off and feeds me to the new dog.

I do brush mine every night as he loves it but still his fur gets matted! Off to the groomers next week so hopefully be easier... His temperament is not an issue though.

They are those huge mountain rescue dogs with the little whiskey barrel round their necks aren't they?

You have the dog, I'll have the whiskey barrel.

BiL was desperate for a dog, sister eventually gave in. As predicted by everyone who knows them despite who's dog it is, the fact he is semi-retired/home-based and she is a nurse, can anyone guess who walks the dog in the dark in the morning?

We looked after the dog for 24 hours when they were away and other dog care arrangements had fallen through; I've never wanted a dog, but it was a real eye-opener to the level of inconvenience they cause. We either had to be within an hour of getting back including finishing what we were doing or doing something we could take the dog with us. I also don't like picking up dog sh!t. Or cleaning up dog puke when it's eaten something out shouldn't have. Or washing faeces of indeterminate source or rotting animal corpse from their coat. And even if you find somewhere dog friendly to stay in holiday, in their experience the dog isn't always keen. Their normally exceptionally well behaved dog is unsettled, barks and chews the furniture in the rental accommodation.

And theirs is a lovely dog, with a really easy going temperament. I can't imagine a dog I'd rather have, but I really really don't want it.

I have to admit, I was a cat person until this summer when I found myself walking my brothers dog a lot. In fact, I've just got back from walking him this lunch time :)

And I'm sold now, it helps he's a very fun Frenchie, but with a lot of character. I think I may be getting one next year!

Oh and having a dog makes you get some excercise several times a day.

I mean, how could you not love this...

Dogs will do what you train them to do. If you don't want them in a part of the house, train them. They are hyper intelligent. We got a German Sheppard puppy 16 months ago. He only messed in the house twice because he was trained to go outside to relieve himself. He knows not to go upstairs, the only things he chews are his toys.........................because he was trained.

Did you tell your partner I don't want a child because they are messy? I don't think so.

Also imagine the huge benefits for your autistic child - your thought process is very short sighted in that regard.

Listen to your negativity, It might make a mess, it might want to go out in the middle of the night, I already have too many things to do, I want to go on adventures. Lets hope your kids don't pick up on your selfish vibes eh.

A dog will teach your kids to look after something other than themselves, to be kind to another living being, teach them responsibility. Why wouldn't you want them to learn these things? Or will it disturb their iPad time when they are quiet?

Do you have kids? A dog is MORE LIKELY to train kids that dad will walk the dog in the rain because they don't want to. etc.

I like dogs; I'd like to have another; but only when it works for me, and the dog.
