DfE Chromebooks - Who do you get to repair them

We have a DfE Chromebook that was issued to the school when we all went in to lock down which has come back with a smashed screen, bent neutral prong on the plug and damage to the casing and the screen hinge.

 

Understandably, we have had the device over a year and any warranty on them will possibly be non-existent now so those that have had devices given to schools and they have come back damaged, who do you use to repair these devices?

 

This Chromebook in question looks like it really cannot be saved and was apparently "left in the student's bag".

As it's out of warranty and already smashed, I'd have a go at replacing the screen yourself. Should be some reasonably cheap on ebay - depending on which model chromebook it is.

Our strategy for these is to just replace and keep for spares. The cost of parts will likely outweigh the value of the equipment now as these were really dirt cheap devices.

We would replace the screen but the plastic frame of the chromebook is broken too.

 

The hinge is still intact and works.

I've repaired several damaged DfE CBs with spares purchased from EET Group, and also had laptops repaired by Eden Repair in Leeds before

You may be able to buy the bezel and top cover from HP. Have you tried getting the spare part numbers and searching online or partsurfer?

We just hand another Chromebook/laptop to them and keep for spares. We were handed quite a few so we have some sitting about as spares.

I just do them myself - spares off ebay or Amazon.

Bear in mind your time to repair these isn't free either.

We repair them ourselves, cannibalising others for parts. Most of the time, it isn't cost effective to replace more than 2 parts on most Chromebooks, as they are very cheap devices.

 

Time-wise, they're quick to repair generally, as there's very little inside them, so its only a few screws and swapping modules.

The parts we required were a new screen, new LCD lid / rear panel and the screen bezel.

 

Turns out all in all, the parts would cost £117 due to the LCD lid / rear panel and screen bezel coming from America / China.

 

A new chromebook on ebay can be purchased for £105!

We had some Lenovo APU laptops purchased few years ago. Not impressed with speed. One died just after the year of RTB warranty. It was beyond economical repair.
